Manchester City welcome Napoli to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening. Both sides sit top of their domestic tables having made blistering starts to the new league campaign.
Where to begin with Manchester City? They enter the game off the back of a 7-2 inhalation of Stoke City at the Etihad on Saturday. The resounding victory was the perfect result to resume normal service following the international break, prior to which City had turned over champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Pep’s philosophy really does seem to have clicked this season and there’s no doubting the Premier League is revelling in the opportunity to see what can only be described as football of the highest quality. The performance levels the players are setting are higher than they’ve ever seen before, but one man seems be standing out even more so. Kevin De Bruyne has gone from strength to strength this season. The Belgian is entering his peak years and the arsenal of passing he has at his disposal is no less than frightening. That being said, the options he has in front of him aren’t to be sniffed at either. The likes of Sane, Sterling and Gabriel Jesus have all been in majestic form, that’s without mentioning the Manchester City talisman, Sergio Aguero. The Argentine is in contention for a return to the starting line up following his rib injury sustained in a car accident in Amsterdam, leaving Guardiola with plenty of options going into City’s third Champions League game this season.
City’s opponents on Tuesday, Napoli, have won their first seven league games in Serie A this season. Their most recent victory came away to Roma, an impressive 1-0 win that saw them stretch their lead at the top to 2 points. The last time these two sides met was in 2011, when Manchester City began their first ever Champions League campaign. It was in that year that Napoli possessed the devastating front three of Hamsik, Cavani and Lavezzi. The trio scored a hatful of goals and terrorised defences across Italy before Lavezzi and Cavani departed for PSG, Hamsik now dropping to a deeper role. The more mature, seasoned Slovakian now supplies the ammunition for a different attacking outfit, with Insigne, Mertens and Callejon producing football that’s equally as delightful to watch. Manager Maurizio Sarri has received an abundance of plaudits and rightly so given his innovative style of play, in a league rebound for low scoring games and slow football. Similar to Pep, he likes his side to play with the ball, counting on the movement of his front three to create space in behind for the full backs. With excellent ball players in the midfield Napoli are certainly an outfit to be reckoned with, but do they have what it takes to stop this free scoring Manchester City side?
Sergio Aguero is in contention following a quick recovery from his car accident. Vincent Kompany remains doubtful with Benjamin Mendy out for what looks like the season.
Milik and Tonelli remain absent for Napoli.
