Manchester City will be aiming to bounce back from their first defeat of the season this weekend, when they welcome Newcastle United to the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola’s side endured a 15 minute panning at the start of the second half against Liverpool last Sunday, conceding 3 goals after entering half time with the score 1-1. City’s capitulation was somewhat salvaged with two late goals from Bernado Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, though their overall second half performance left plenty to be admired.

The Anfield hoodoo they carried into the game was well documented in the build up, but even the more pessimistic of City fans struggled to fathom the defending on display after the interval. John Stones’ inability to withstand Firmino’s pressure and strength was bad enough, but to lose the ball inside their own third five minutes later was criminal in such a huge game. The shocker from Ederson to allow Salah his inevitable moment of gloy was the icing on the cake, leaving many City fans frustrated at the manner of their first defeat of the season, rather than the principle of the loss itself. There was also a large a large amount of confusion surrounding the decision to leave David Silva on the bench for the duration of the match. The Spaniard has been subject to personal issues of late, though his imperative role in the side would suggest that if he’s available for selection, he should start the game.

The Liverpool debacle aside, City enjoy playing against Newcastle. The previous two meetings between the sides at the Etihad have ended 5-0 and 6-1 to the home side, with Sergio Aguero enjoying a 5 goal haul last season. The Argentine has scored 11 goals in 11 appearances against the Magpies and he’s set to lead the line on Saturday with Gabriel Jesus facing a further 4 weeks on the sidelines. Kevin De Bruyne also sparkled in this fixture last season. The uncertainty surrounding David Silva’s involvement will leave creative duties down to the Belgian, luckily for City he was one of the few that left Anfield with any credit on Sunday.

Despite their unbelievable form, a proportion of Manchester City fans still believed they would eventually lose a game this season. Now it’s about how they react against a Newcastle side who did make things tricky at St James Park in December. A couple of games into the season, I myself tipped Newcastle to get relegated. That being said, the resilience Rafa has instilled into his players and his use of evidently low resources has been impressive. Their opening two games against Spurs and Huddersfield left little to be admired, but a handful of positive home results alongside away victories to Swansea, West Ham and Stoke have given the Magpies a fighting chance as we approach the final third of the season.

The trip to Manchester City this weekend is unlikely to be a game where Newcastle lose or secure Premier League football for next season. The Toon will be more focused on the games against teams in a similar position, giving them a sense of freedom on Saturday. City’s slip up last weekend could result in a backlash though, an assertive home performance to display their title winning credentials, though their opposition know all too well, just how fragile a 12 point gap can be.

Team News

Benjamin Mendy remains absent for City, as does Vincent Kompany. David Silva is in contention despite ongoing personal issues. Fabian Delph faces a spell on the sidelines. Jesus faces another 4 weeks out.

For Newcastle, Gayle, Mbemba and Mitrovic are all doubtful. Lejeune & Gamez remain sidelined.
