Manchester City go in search of another win on Wednesday as they take on Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad. City have been imperious of late, they’re fresh on hammering Southampton 6-1 and the last time they faced off against Wednesday’s opponents they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
That 3-0 was seriously impressive and City will be looking to do a similar job in the familiar surroundings of the Etihad. The hosts are 1/8 to win, whilst Shakhtar are a massive 28/1, those odds are a testament to how good Man City are as the Ukrainians aren’t your regular whipping boys that you might find at this stage of the competition, although they have never won when playing in England.
City -2 at 1/1 (Betfair) is one bet that I think could pay out, particularly with the hosts being in such good form at the moment. The current aggregate score at the Etihad this season is 26-3 in favour of City and I could see them adding another bunch of goals to that tally. Four of City’s six home matches have been won by three goals or more which also bodes well.
Raheem Sterling has been in great form recently scoring goals and creating them also. The England man is 9/2 (Bet365) to score first and 19/20 (Blacktype) to score at any time in the match. You can also back Raheem Sterling to score and Man City to win at 11/10 (Betstars).
City will be without Kevin De Bruyne who damaged knee ligaments in his last match. Ilkay Gundogan is also remains on the injury list .
Vincent Kompany could return to the side with Fabian Delph another possible starter at Left Back.
Shakhtar could have Taison back in the starting lineup after he was introduced from the bench in their league game on Saturday.
Viktor Kovalenko could also start for the visitors after netting the winning goal when coming on as a substitute on Saturday.
Potential Manchester City Starting XI: Ederson; Walker, Kompany, Laporte, Delph; B. Silva, Fernandinho, D. Silva; Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling.
Potential Shakhtar Starting XI: Pyatov, Matvyenko, Krivtsov, Rakitskiy, Ismaily, Stepanenko, Maycon, Tasion, Kovalenko, Fernando, Moraes
Head To Head
- Wednesday will be the third competitive fixture between the two sides with City winning two of those matches with Shakhtar winning one.
Key Stats & Facts
- In Shakhtar’s last five away games 57% of match goals were scored in the second half.
- All of City’s goals conceded at home this season have come in the first-half.
- Man City 1/8
- Draw 5/2
- Shakhtar 28/1
City didn’t have many problems when these two faced off last month and I can’t see them being too flustered here. City’s relentless approach to attacking should see them score enough goals to beat the handicap.
