Second faces third in the Premier League on Saturday as two of the top six battle it out. In last week’s games, United were surprisingly defeated by Huddersfield in an embarrassing display while Spurs ruthlessly disposed of Liverpool. In the midweek Carabao Cup matches, Spurs threw away a two goal lead against West Ham and their confidence may have taken a hit after their good run. Mourinho’s men had a comfortable win away at Swansea but it is their performances in the league that they will be judged on.
Both teams are five points off Man City and this is an ideal match to display their title credentials. You would expect Mourinho to expect a response after their attitude and intensity was questioned by the media and even players such as Ander Herrera.
Pochettino has made Spurs more adaptable this season; they have struggled against Liverpool in the past but they sat deep and played a front two of Son and Kane to make runs in behind and test the Liverpool defence. It worked a treat as they scored four. His teams were usually more dimensional in the way they used to press up the pitch. However, Spurs can now play in many different ways and it shows their quality that you cannot be sure what XI or approach Pochettino will go for.
It is a huge test for Pochettino. Despite his superb work with Spurs, he has yet to really get a significant win, away from home at one of the top six. The job has got harder with Harry Kane ruled out with a hamstring injury. They have looked fantastic away from home, winning all four of their away games and will still be confident taking the game to United.
A win is possibly even more important for Mourinho. A draw and a poor performance was just about acceptable but at home, United fans expect a win and it is paramount for United to close the gap at the top but also beat one of their top six rivals. They haven’t played well for a few weeks and the absence of Paul Pogba is a big blow. They miss his ability to break the lines of a defence and offer creativity and courage on the ball. Romelu Lukaku was bought for games like this and he is now four games without a goal.
Kane is a big miss for Spurs. Llorente is likely to replace him. Bailly and Jones should both start.
Potential Man United Starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Jones, Bailly, Young; Matic, Herrera; Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Rashford, Lukaku
Man United 6/5, Draw 12/5, Spurs 11/4
