Expect defences to be on top when Manchester United host Valencia in the Champions League.

Manchester United lost convincingly to West Ham, 3-1 on Saturday to extend their current miserable run in the league.

A 1-1 draw against newly promoted Wolves sparked criticism of United’s defensive-minded tactics by one of there key players, Paul Pogba.

The midfielder has since been stripped of the vice captaincy within the team but did maintain his place in the starting line-up in that defeat against West Ham. The midfielder’s form has made a case for his starting position, helping his side to the top of Group H.

The World Cup winner scored twice in United’s Champions League opener in a 3-0 victory over BSC Young Boys to top the group over Valencia’s previous opponents, Juventus.

Valencia were condemned to a 2-0 defeat to open their account for this season’s tournament but have since maintained an unbeaten record.

A three-match run without defeat includes just the one victory, however, a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in their latest fixture. This result follows a 0-0 stalemate against Villareal before a 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo, suggesting a lack of attacking threat having scored just 5 goals in the league so far this season.

Michy Batshuayi, formerly of Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund, currently plays for the visitors.

The Verdict

What these two sides do boast are pretty resilient defences and I believe they will come out on top in this one. Despite United’s convincing victory in the opening round of this tournament, both sides come into this fixture, out of form.
