Manchester United suffered yet another forgettable season as they stumbled to 6th place in the Premier League, with new manager Erik ten Hag looking to get the club back into the coveted Champions league spots. However, securing a spot in the top six may be a more realistic goal, unless some major changes can be introduced to iron out Manchester United’s current weaknesses.

With this season’s competition being greater than ever, we are excited to see where Man United final standings will be. Their closest rivals are Tottenham, Arsenal, and somewhat surprisingly, Newcastle.

These teams have been constantly improving with Arsenal finally finding some much-needed stability after the departure of Arsene Wenger in 2018, thanks to former Arsenal player Mikel Arteta. Tottenham and Newcastle have seen a financial push from their board allowing them to sign better players, greatly improving their squads.

Looking back to the previous season Manchester United secured a decent number of points at home – 35 out of their total points tally of 58, to be exact. What was truly worrying was their away record – 23 points out of a possible 57 – meaning that improving their away form is key to improving on last season.

United were looking to hit the ground running after an exciting pre-season, including a 4-0 win against bitter rivals Liverpool, but got an early wake-up call from Brighton. The Seagulls went on beat Man Utd at Old Trafford for the first time ever.

The Red Devils are up for an intense opening 10 games which include matches against title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as Arsenal and Leicester, who will prove to be tough opponents.

Betting on Manchester United’s home fixtures will give you a better chance of winning, as their historical home form will reveal.

Apart from these top 5 bookmakers, there are many other football betting sites which offer risk-free bets, free bet promotions and other promotions. There are also plenty that provide regular offers on big matches involving Manchester United as well as other teams, together with general promotions on sports and football in particular.

Given their current position in the league, along with the strength at the top of the table, the odds of Manchester United winning the league are very unlikely.

Out of all teams, Manchester United has won the league title the most times – 20 in total. This is one more than their greatest rivals, Liverpool. 13 of those titles came in the Premier League era (since 1992), all coming under the leadership of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. In fact, the latter claimed the Premier League ‘Manager of the Season' award 12 times during his prolonged spell at United.

  • List Icon

The last Premier League title Man Utd claimed came in the 2012/13 season, and they are the only team to have won the title 3 consecutive times (and manage the feat twice!)

Since their heyday under Sir Alex Ferguson, though, Manchester United have struggled to find the required consistency to even challenge other teams such as Manchester City and Chelsea to win the Premier League again.

After 27 years of stability, they have changed their manager three times in five years. David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho have all tried to steer the club back to success, but they could only muster a second place finish with 19 points off the lead, at best.

Ole Takes the Wheel

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then stepped in for the Reds as caretaker manager after the management sacked Jose Mourinho in December 2018, following one of the worst starts to a season for the club with just seven wins out of 17 matches. Solskjaer managed to revive the fans’ hopes of ending the season within the top four – however, they missed out after a poor run in the final five matches, failing to win in each one.

During the 2019/20 season, the club invested in valuable reinforcements to the team in centre-back Harry Maguire, right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka over the summer, as well as attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes during the January transfer window for a total of more than £170 million.

They managed to reduce the number of goals conceded and started scoring more, especially in front of the home fans at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes instantly became a reference point for the team as he scored 8 goals for the team that season, despite only joining halfway through.

In the 2020/21 season, United managed to finish the closest to the eventual Premier League champions following the end of Sir Alex Ferguson's era. However, ending 12 points behind the champions, they could hardly be considered challengers for the title. Despite having brought in experienced striker Edinson Cavani and hard-working Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, United were still not scoring enough goals to get them past tough opponents.

All losses came in front of the home crowd – or lack of one, since most matches were played behind closed doors due to the pandemic. The team suffered six home losses, making it the second worst season out of the previous 15. However, United managed to gain the most points – 43 points – from away games in comparison, after not losing away a single time – something which had only ever been achieved by Arsenal in the 2001/02 and 2003/04 seasons.

In fact, they managed to set the Premier League record for the longest unbeaten away run. The string of 29 unbeaten away matches came to an end against Leicester City on Saturday 16th October 2021, when they lost 4-2 to the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Return To Old Trafford

Most recently, the team purchased one of the best football players to ever grace the game – Cristiano Ronaldo – from Italian giants Juventus. Despite his age, Cristiano has proved he can still play at the highest levels and produce moments of sheer brilliance. His addition to the team has brought about more goal-scoring opportunities and more goals. Having said that, his future is uncertain due to his desire to play Champions League football.

Ralf Rangnick’s Reign as Manager

After sacking Ole, United turned to Michael Carrick as interim manager until they got German coach Ralf Rangnick to sit on the Red Devils' bench. Since joining, there have been questions about his style of management; that said, he has managed to keep the losses to a minimum. Despite this, many feel that United have not been playing up to the standard they should be at, especially after having strengthened the squad with the likes of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho. The feelings of the fans were justified as Man United slumped to a sixth-place finish, and Ralf Rangnick departed to manage the Austrian National Team.

After being knocked out of the Champions League by Atlético Madrid, Man Utd had no chance of winning any of the competition they had competed in the 2021/22 season, which means their trophy drought continues.

Manchester United enjoys being the only Premier League side to have a positive historic record against all the clubs currently in the top flight.

Historically speaking, the team which has given the Reds the hardest time has been the team they’ve played against the most – Arsenal. They have faced each other in more than 200 matches, with Arsenal managing to get a win in 36% of them.

The team with the largest draw ratio in matches played against Manchester United are Leeds United, with 32% of the Premier League matches ending in a draw.

The team against which Man Utd have the best record is Watford. Both clubs have met 26 times, with Man Utd taking the 3 points 18 times (69.2%).

Unsurprisingly, the team against which Man Utd have the worst win ratio is Liverpool, with the Red Devils emerging victorious in 38.6% of the matches played.

Against rivals Manchester City, Man Utd currently enjoy a comfortable historic advantage, winning 65 to City's 47. Interestingly, the all-time goal difference between these two sits at 11 goals in United’s favour, which makes it the second smallest goal difference advantage Man Utd have when compared to all other clubs.

Liverpool is second best with 8, while Aston Villa have the worst goal difference of all, with 85 goals fewer than the number United have scored against them.

Erik ten Hag joined Manchester United at the end of the 2021/2022 season, replacing interim manager Ralf Rangnick. Previously, Ten Hag enjoyed success with AFC Ajax, winning 3 Eredivisie titles in 5 seasons with the club. Ten Hag also guided AFC Ajax to an incredible run in the Champions League, reaching the semi-finals in 2019.

Ten Hag’s life at the Theatre of Dreams will not be easy, mainly due to unstable way the club has been run for the past decade. This, coupled with the fact that the squad is in desperate need of an upgrade, means that the Dutchman will have his hands full.

Many believe that this task may be too much for Ten Hag, evidenced by the fact that he is currently the eight most likely coach to get sacked first this season at 20/1 odds by Paddy Power.

This season will prove to be a unique one for all clubs, players, and managers, as the 2022 World Cup is set to take place from November 20th to December 18th in Qatar. This will take place midway through the season and might prove to be too chaotic for players to handle. English players in particular will be looking to impress their managers to ensure a spot in England’s World Cup squad.

Erik ten Hag has already begun the process by bring in some new exciting players while also releasing several aging players with hefty wage bills. Below is a list of players who have been signed so far and those who have been permanently released (players loaned out have not been included).

The Dutch manager is still looking to sign a number of key players. Currently, Man United are close to signing a deal for Adrien Rabiot; however, his wages could prove to be a large hurdle. Ten Hag will also be looking to bring in young exciting talents as well as some established big names to help him steer the club in the right direction.

With a number of player set to leave and still plenty of time till the transfer window shuts, Manchester United’s transfer saga could prove to be vital for this season's success.

Frenkie De Jong

  • List Icon

Although Frenkie De Jong is currently United’s highest profile transfer target, things are not looking good for the latter as Barcelona still reportedly owe De Jong £14.5 million in wages. He would be an excellent signing for Manchester United, but unfortunately is looking more and more unlikely.

Antony

  • List Icon

Manchester United are desperate to sign a new striker, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo’s possible departure hanging over their heads. Erik ten Hag is keen on a move for the young Brazilian, having previously worked with him at AFC Ajax. However, Ajax are making it difficult for the Red Devils to make progress.

Youri Tielemans

  • List Icon

Youri Tielemans would help to bolster United’s midfield and would be a solid choice if Frenkie De Jong’s transfer had to fall through. The young Belgian is also being heavily linked to Arsenal who could emerge as favourites for Tielemans.

James Ward-Prowse

  • List Icon

Yet another midfielder with Premier League experience, Ward-Prowse offers an option to strengthen United’s midfield. Ward-Prowse is also renowned for being one of the best free-kick takers in the league, which will only help as United scored just one free kick from 19 opportunities.

The Europa League presents a unique mix of clubs unlike any other tournament in Europe, from European giants such as Manchester United to relatively small clubs from smaller leagues.

As for United, they find themselves back in the group stages of the Europa league for the first time since 2019, making it all the way to the semi-final that season. United went one better the following season, finishing off as losing finalists against Villareal on penalties as David De Gea saw his strike saved.

The Red Devils have tasted success in this competition once in their history during the 2016/2017 season under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho, beating AFC Ajax 2-0 in the final thanks to two unlikely heroes in Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. As a matter of fact, the Europa League remains the last major trophy Manchester United have won.

Currently favourites to win the League this season, United will be hoping to find some silverware here, creating some interesting opportunities for punters. We recommend our detailed Europa League betting guide to help you place smarter bets and find success!

Having been a dominant force in world football for a number of decades, United have participated in the Europa League, either from the beginning or through elimination from the champions league, a total of 11 times, reaching the semi-finals three times.

Interestingly, Manchester United’s two all-time top scorers in the competition both still play for the club, namely Bruno Fernandes with eight goals and Marcus Rashford with seven goals. They will both be looking to add to that tally in the new season.

Apart from the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, Manchester United also compete in the EFL Cup (also known as the Carabao Cup) and the FA Cup.

In addition, they have managed to win the FA Cup 12 times and have an average of 1.8 goals scored per match across all the 471 matches contested in this tournament. They also have an impressive record of 2.07 goals on average in every home match played.

When it comes to the League Cup, the Reds have won it five times in total after reaching the final nine times in all. They carried over the same scoring prowess from the FA Trophy, and in fact have a 2.07 goal average for every home match played in the League Cup. Their win ratio is 72% at home, 45% away, and 58% overall.

We suggest BetVictor, bet365 or the Paddy Power bookmaker for all your Manchester United betting.

Manchester United have won a total of 20 top-flight titles, seven of which came before the Premier League era started.

Manchester United have nabbed just one Europa League trophy – in 2017.

Manchester United have won three Champions League editions – in 1968, 1999, and 2008.

In the past five years, United have played 95, won 54 (56.8%), drew 24 (25.3%), and lost 17 (17.9%).

In the past five years, United have played 95, won 45 (47.4%), drew 24 (25.3%), and lost 26 (27.3%).

Upon inspecting the statistics from the competitions, one thing is very apparent. Old Trafford has been a fortress for Manchester United, providing a space where players throughout the years have given all they’ve got for the team. They are strongest when their fans are backing them, and they have proven to be a force to be reckoned with for any opponent, regardless of form and calibre.

Betting on Manchester United is always a risky move, but we suggest you make the best use of the home advantage whenever possible, especially now that fans are back where they belong – in the stadium.
