Mexico head into this game knowing that a point will be enough to secure top spot in the group the luxury of avoiding Brazil in the second round.
As for Sweden, they were left with a mountain to climb in this group after conceding that last-minute winner against Germany and will now need to win this game to have any chance of qualifying.
Mexico have been extremely impressive in their two games so far in the group, especially in their 1-0 win over Germany. They were comfortable in their 2-1 victory over South Korea and will be a very tough team to beat in the knockout-stages.
Sweden play a similar style of football to their opponents, defensive minded and play on the counter-attack. Mexico have the pace on their wings in Lozano and Layun to hurt Sweden, whilst Sweden are extremely physical and will look to set-pieces as their form of attack.
Mexico have the balance between a strong defence and a quick counter-attack, which makes Sweden’s job very difficult, especially as they have to win, providing Germany beat South Korea in the other game in the group. This will play right into Mexico’s hands and with that in mind, it is hard to go against Mexico here.
The Mexican’s have kept six clean sheets in their last nine matches and have conceded just four goals in that process. Sweden have scored just six goals in their last nine ten games, with under 2.5 landing in eight of their last 10 matches. Under 2.5 has also returned money in 7 of Mexico’s last 10 so goals are not expected here.
Juan Carlos Osorio is expected to name an unchanged side from the one that beat South Korea in the last game.
Janne Andersson also has the luxury of no injury concerns and could also name the same starting eleven that lost in the last minute to Germany in their last game.
Potential Mexico Starting XI: Ochoa; Alvarez, Salcedo, Moreno, Gallardo; Herrera, Guardado; Layun, Vela, Lozano; Chicharito
Potential Sweden Starting XI: Olsen; Lustig, Lindelof, Granqvist, Augustinsson; Claesson, Larsson, Ekdal, Forsberg; Toivonen, Berg
- These two sides have played each other four times; with Sweden winning twice, Mexico once and one draw.
Key Stats & Facts
- Sweden have kept a clean sheet in their last four matches against Mexico in all competitions.
- Mexico are undefeated in 17 of their last 18 matches at the World Cup.
- Mexico have seen under 2.5 goals in their last three games against Sweden in all competitions.
- Mexico – 29/20
- Draw – 12/5
- Sweden – 23/10
Mexico know that a point here will be enough to secure their qualification and top spot in the group and they will be set-up to play on the counter-attack and allow Sweden to try and break them down.
Sweden know Mexico have pace, so will be very wary of going for the win too early in the game, meaning this could be a game settled by just the single goal. Mexico are difficult to break down and Sweden will have to go for it at some point, which will suit Mexico down to the ground.
Sweden will rue that late goal conceded against Germany, as this could have been a game where a point would have secured both these sides qualification. Mexico to win it on the counter-attack.
