Finally the UEFA Nations League is back and Friday night sees a resurgent Netherlands team take on World Champions, France. The Dutch enter the game needing a win to keep their hopes of progression in the competition alive. France, meanwhile, only need to avoid defeat in Rotterdam to guarantee top spot.
The French will be up against a tough Dutch outfit that beat Germany 3-0 in their last UNL game. Ronald Koeman’s side have been in good form at home, winning six of their last seven fixtures and drawing one. They have scored at least two goals in each of their six wins.
Those last two home games for the ‘Oranje’ have seen former Manchester United winger, Memphis Depay, find the back of the net. Depay has 4 goals in his last 4 appearances for his club side Lyon. The Winger is 12/5 (Betfair) to score at any time in the match and that could be a good angle against a France team that have conceded in their last three games.
The Netherlands are definitely showing signs of promise with their recent displays but they are coming up against the World Champions. France have won eight out of their last ten competitive fixtures and they’re best priced 16/11 (Unibet) to win on Friday night.
The French will be without Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial who both withdrew from the squad this week but they’ll still be able to rely on a whole host of top class players.
Another angle I like is for France to win and both teams to score which is priced at 17/5 (888Sport) and could be good value as nine of France’s last fifteen games have seen both teams score. France have also won five straight matches against the Dutch.
France will be without Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Alexandre Lacazette.
Marco Bizot and Javairo Dilrosun will be looking to win their first caps for the Netherlands.
Potential Netherlands Starting XI: Cillessen; Dumfries, De Ligt, Van Dijk, Blind; Wijnaldum, F. De Jong, Strootmanl; Promes, Depay, Babel
Potential France Starting XI: Lloris; Pavard, Kimpembe, Varane, Hernandez; Kante, Matuidi; Mbappe, Griezmann, Dembele; Giroud.
Head To Head
- There have been 27 meetings between the two sides with France winning 14 and the Netherlands winning 10 with 3 draws.
- France have won the last 5 meetings between the two sides.
Key Stats & Facts
- The Netherlands are unbeaten in their last 7 home fixtures.
- The Netherlands first two UNL games produced more than 2.5 goals.
- France have not lost for 15 games.
- Netherlands 21/10
- Draw 13/5
- France 11/8
This ought to be a really high quality match as both teams have some high class players. The Netherlands will be a difficult challenge for the French to overcome but I think Les Bleu will have that extra bit of quality to see them over the line.
