Heading into the final round of Group D Nigeria face Argentina in a match-up with everything to play for. The African side currently have three points and a win would see them qualify, however, for Argentina, it’s much more complicated.

The South American’s need to beat Nigeria and hope that Iceland (who have the better goal difference than themselves) fail to pick up anything against group leaders Croatia. If Iceland were to beat Croatia, Argentina would have to better their result to qualify as runners-up.

With all of that out the way, let’s have a look at their form.

Argentina drew their opening game 1-1 with Iceland as Lionel Messi missed a match-winning penalty. Their second game was a disaster as they changed a back four to a back three and conceded three goals in the process. Croatia ran out as comfortable 3-0 winners and Argentina hardly threatened going forward.

Nigeria started their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 loss against Croatia but managed to bounce back with an impressive display against Iceland, this time winning 2-0. Pacey Leicester striker Musa took all the headlines after scoring a brace in what was clinical showing by the African side.

Coming off the back of a win, Nigeria will be the more ‘confident’ side in this fixture and can take even more confidence from the fact they beat Tuesday nights opponents 4-2 in a friendly last November.

Team News

Jon Obi Mikel is a slight doubt after sustaining an injury to his hand in the Iceland fixture and Ahmed Musa is likely to keep his place in the team.

Argentina’s team news is much more complicated than that of Nigeria’s. Sampaoli has reportedly lost the dressing room and there is a lot of confusion over who will be starting this must win fixture. Higuaín and Dybala are likely to come into the team after coming off the bench against Croatia.

Potential Nigeria Starting XI: Uzoho, Balogun, Troost-Ekong, Omeruo, Moses, Idowu, Elebo, Obi, Ndidi, Iheanacho, Musa

Potential Argentina Starting XI: Caballero, Salvio, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico, Mascherano, Banega, Messi, Dybala, Higuaín

  • Draw 16/5
  • Argentina 4/7

The Verdict

With both defences looking rather shaky and inconsistent, goals will be a theme of this fixture and the recent meetings highlight this as over 4.5 goals would have landed in three of their last four meetings, with the mere over 3.5 landing in the other. Both team to score is looking likely at best odd of 10/11 with Bet365

Messi is yet to get on the score sheet and if anybody was going to rescue Argentina from their current situation it’s going to be him. He’s had more shots than any other Argentinian player and you can get him at 6/5 with Sky Bet to have 3+ shots on target.

Recommended Bets

  • BTTS – YES @ 10/11 (bet365)
  • Messi 3+ shots on target @ 6/5 (Sky Bet)
