The two sides will meet in Group D in Volgograd in an arena where England produced a promising display, got pegged back and dug deep to find a win. Iceland perhaps got the biggest shock result of the opening matches with a draw against Argentina, muting Lionel Messi for the 90 minutes and frustrating the Argentinian with a penalty save in the second half. The Icelandic warriors played with steel, determination and grit, the exact qualities that saw them defeat England at Euro 2016 and get them to this World Cup.
Nigeria on the other hand have not had a promising build up to this year’s world cup and this showed with their deflated and poor performance against Croatia in their first game. They lost 2-0 and sit bottom of Group D, needing three points here or they are pretty much down and out. In general, African sides don’t have a great World Cup track records. In Brazil, 2014,, two African sides progressed through qualification, but just one in the last seven consecutive tournaments prior to this one have more than one progressed. Senegal were the only African team to win their opening group game match, which was in fact the final first round of matches in Russia.
This game is hard to predict on paper, with both teams not on the best form pre-tournament and Iceland starting ahead of Nigeria in the Group D table. I don’t expect many goals to be scored and if it is a cagey affair I would predict a slight Iceland win. There is some value to be had in these markets, especially with Iceland to win under 2.5 goals priced at 15/4 with bet365.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson is out for Iceland.
Potential Nigeria Starting XI: Uzoho; Abdullahi, Troost-Ekong, Balogun, Idowu; Ndidi, Onazi, Mikel; Iwobi, Ighalo, Moses
Potential Iceland Starting XI: Ragnar Sigurdsson, Arnason, Magnusson, Saevarsson, Hallfredsson, Gunnarsson, Bjarnason, Gudmundsson, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Bodvarsson.
Head To Head
- The two teams have never played.
Key Stats & Facts
- Nigeria lost both warm up matches, and lost their opener against Croatia.
- Nigeria’s last 4 have seen under 2.5 goals
- Iceland have scored in all of their games at a major tournament.
- BTTS in Iceland’s last 4 in which they haven’t won any of.
- Nigeria 19/10
- Draw 11/5
- Iceland 17/10
Iceland are slight favourites with the bookmakers here and this is justified. They look a much stronger team than Nigeria and possess a team spirit and togetherness that not many can rival. I fully expect Iceland to win here, in a game that won’t see many goals.
