Guests Qatar kick off their debut Copa America campaign with Copa regulars Paraguay. The Arab based nation have been building for their 2022 World Cup and the investment in youth development and top class coaching is providing dividends. Al-Anabbi recently defeated Japan in the asian cup with a side that has come through the ranks together.
Gaffer Felix Bas has been promoted throughout the youth levels with this crop so he knows them better than anyone else. They’ll give it a good go in Brazil and shouldn’t be underestimated. However they haven’t played big sides regularly outside of Asia so this is a step up for them, it will be interesting to see how they fair.
Qatar are built on a strong, organised defence and a midfield full of running. Up front they have a counter attacking threat with the pace of Akram Afif and Almoez Ali, I’d expect them to sit deep and try use the two forwards as an outball.
Paraguay are one of the lesser fancied sides in this Copa too. Gone and the days of Roque Santa Cruz and Lucas Barrios. Their current side has flashes of quality with the likes of Miguel Almiron tipped to be the key man however they come into this tournament in poor form with just one win in their last eight. They concede regularly too and they’ll have to tighten up if they want to advance to the latter stages you’d have thought.
They’re likely to play a 4-2-3-1 formation with Bologna’s Federico Santander spearheading the attack and Newcastle’s Almiron pilling the stings behind him. This is a big game for them as they’re not expected to get too much out of Colombia and Argentina, the other duo in group B.
Potential Paraguay Starting XI: Silva, Pires, Balbuena, Gomez, Alonso, Ortiz, Rojas, Dominguez, Almiron, Iturbe, Santander.
Potential Qatar Starting XI: Sheeb, Ismail, Hisham, Salman, Hassan, Madibo, Khouki, Hatim, Al-Haydos, Afif, Ali.
Key Stats & Facts
- Paraguay have won just one of their last 8 games.
- Qatar best Japan to win the Asian Cup earlier this year.
- Qatar conceded just one goal in the Asian Cup.
- Paraguay – 3/4
- Draw – 5/2
- Qatar – 9/2
Qatar have been given ample respect by the bookmakers and given their good recent record it’s understandable. This is unchartered territory for them though and Paraguay will see this as a must win you’d think.
I think it will be tight and therefore I’ll take the 19/5 (MarathonBet) on Draw HT/Paraguay FT in the double result market. It could be a feeling each other out process in the early knockings but the Paraguay fans will be urging their team in in the second half and that could see them sneak a narrow win.
Given Qatar are a small side they can be vulnerable from set pieces. Therefore I’m inclined to have a small stakes punt on West Ham centre half Fabian Balbuena to notch at 13/1 (Betfair). We’ve seen him get on the end of a few corners for the Hammers and he’s the leader of this side. It could be the best opportunity for La Albirroja To Score given Qatar’s solid defensive set up.
