On Saturday afternoon the world will rest its eyes on what is arguably one of the most watched footballing events of the year. Whilst not being a pure derby like the Old Firm or the Argentine Superclásico, emotions still run high between both clubs, who are undoubtedly seen as the biggest teams in Spain. Being the biggest and the best is down to the biggest and best players each team has: Cristiano Ronaldo & Leo Messi. The former has just come from winning his 5th Ballon d’Or, equalling his rival’s tally, whilst the latter continues to amaze the footballing world.

Real Madrid will go in to the match having just won the Club World Cup, their 5th trophy of the year under manager Zinedine Zidane, but don’t let it fool you: Barcelona sit atop of La Liga with an 11 point margin between both clubs, despite Los Blancos having a game in hand.

It’s safe to say that no one expected Ernesto Valverde’s side to do as well as they have been, especially after being humiliated by Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercup and losing Neymar to PSG. However, the Basque coach has managed to make things work, with the signing of Paulinho and the reintroduction of Thomas Vermaelen into the first team after the injury of Samuel Umtiti being called into question, and all this has led to Barça being unbeaten for the first few months of the season.

Real Madrid have had a lot more problems, the main one being the lack of goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have lacked both consistency and form throughout the season. Consistency and form have also been absent from the team itself, with losses to Real Betis and newly-promoted Girona seen as awkward, to say the least.

At the end of the day, stats are stats, and the unpredictability of a match such as this one is what truly makes El Clásico, well, a clásico.

Team News

Real Madrid will boast a full plethora of players going into the game, but Barça aren’t so lucky: French internationals Ousmane Dembélé and Samuel Umtiti are both unavailable, and both Paco Alcácer and Gerard Deulofeu picked up injuries in training last week.

Potential Real Madrid Starting XI: Navas, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Csemiro, Modric, Kroos, Ronaldo, Benzema.

Potential Barcelona Starting XI:  ter Stegen, Sergi Roberto, Piqué, Vermaelen, Alba, Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta, Paulinho, Messi, Suárez.
