A poor start to the defence of their La Liga title has left Real Madrid sitting in 4th place, 15 points behind arch rivals Barcelona. Zidane’s side seemed to be lacking in ideas up until early February, with some criticising the frenchman’s ability to enforce positive change on the back-to-back Champions League winning side. What fixture would represent the turning point for the 12 time European champions? The opening knockout round of that very competition.
Real Madrid’s 5-2 aggregate win versus now seven time Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain, has been a catalyst for the Spanish giants resurgence going into the business end of their campaign. With no hope of regaining their league crown and form that can only be described as patchy, it seemed Real Madrid’s season was all but over. But with an impressive 3-0 win away at Juventus setting up a probable birth in the Semi-finals of a tournament they have become so famous for winning, their players have found purpose in securing something that has not been achieved since 1976 – winning three consecutive European cups.
There is an old saying ‘Always the bridesmaid, never the bride’ – although this isn’t something that is completely accurate in terms of Juventus’ Champions League success, they have become somewhat known as the the perennial silver medalists. Since the European Cup changed it’s format in 1992 they have reached 6 finals, lifting the title only once. Often unchallenged domestically, the Old Lady have been able to put all their resources into climbing the European mountain, that is until this season.
Max Allegri’s side are currently on the longest consecutive run of domestic titles in the country’s history (6), but the emergence of Maurizio Sarri’s revolutionary Napoli side has put the 33 time Serie A champions on notice. It is difficult to say whether the Turin club have taken their eye off the European ball in favour of quelling the Neapolitan uprising. But one thing is clear after their 3-0 home defeat to the holders of the Europe’s most prized possession – they now require a miracle to finally put their bridesmaid status to bed.
Bookings in the first leg to both Rodrigo Bentancur and Paulo Dybala mean they will be missing through suspension, as well as Andrea Barzagli and Feredrico Bernardeschi both doubts through injury. Madrid are without club captain Sergio Ramos through suspension, whilst Nacho and Jesus Vallejo are injury concerns, leaving Zidane with a problem picking a partner for Raphael Varane in the heart of defence.
Potential Real Madrid Starting XI: Navas, Carvajal, Varane, Casemiro, Marcelo, Kovacic, Kroos, Modric, Isco, Ronaldo, Benzema.
Potential Juventus Starting XI: Buffon, Cuadrado, Rugani, Benatia, Chellini, Sandro, Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi, Mandzukic, Higuain.
