A fixture that could quite easily have been the final for a lot of people stands out as the tie of the round and, for some, could be the un-doing of this record breaking Real Madrid side.
Madrid are at home and therefore will be expected to at least score in this one, but PSG boast, arguably, the best attacking three in the world with Neymar, Cavani and Mbappe, so it is also hard to see them keeping a clean sheet. Madrid have only kept one in the last nine matches, which looks to be a real problem heading into this game.
Madrid’s form has been extremely low-par for their standards, they sit in fourth position in the league, 17 points behind leaders Barcelona. They are out of the Copa Del Ray also, so the Champions League is their last chance of silverware for the season.
PSG, on the other hand, are flying this season. They topped their group ahead of Bayern Munich and scored 25 goals in the process, more than any other team. They are 12 points clear in the French league and in Neymar and Cavani they have two of the most prolific strikers in world football and this will be seen as a real chance to show how strong they are.
From a betting point of view, goals certainly look to be the way to go. There have been over 2.5 goals in PSG’s last 13 games in the Champions League and in 18 of Madrid’s last 19 UCL matches. At 47/100, it does not represent much value but over 3.5 could be the way to go at 6/5 best priced. However, given Madrid’s poor form this season, including finishing second behind Spurs in the group stage, there really is a realistic chance of seeing them lose here.
PSG are in incredible form and at 21/10, look like extremely good value for a victory. However, this is the Champions League and Madrid usually rise to the occasion, especially in the big games. The draw at 71/25 could be a good way to go and a result both would be relatively happy with going into the second leg.
Dani Carvajal is suspended for this first-leg and gives Zidane a real issue at right back. Nacho is expected to start ahead of youngster, Achraf Hakimi.
Casamiro and Gareth Bale were rested at the weekend and likely to start in this one.
Edison Cavani, Thiago Silva, Marco Veratti and Layvin Kurzawa are expected to play after being rested at the weekend.
Thiago Motta is out, so Giovani Lo Celso will play in midfield whilst Dani Laves and Thomas Meunier will compete for the right-back slot.
Potential Real Madrid Starting XI: Nava; Nacho, Varane, Ramos, Marcello; Modric, Casmiro, Kroos; Bale, Benzema, Ronaldo
Potential PSG Starting XI: Areola; Alves, Marquinhos, Silva, Kurzawa; Veratti, Celso, Rabiot; Mbappe, Cavani, Neymar
