Barcelona take a convincing lead to Roma after a 4-1 win last week in the reverse fixture in the Champions League quarter final. They were heavy favourite’s to progress before the first leg was played and they will be at even shorter odds now, yet Ernesto Valverde will still want a strong showing from his side.
2 own goals are never going to help the cause over a 2-leg tie, yet that is exactly what happened last week when Kostas Manolas and Daniele De Rossi both turned the ball into their own net for Roma. The comfortable lead may allow Valverde to rest key players, and also means Sergio Busquets doesn’t have to be rushed back, after missing the weekend fixture against Leganes.
The one slither of hope Roma can take away from the 1st leg is the fact Edin Dzeko managed to get the Italian side an away goal, meaning a 3-0 win would send Roma through. However, that does seem extremely unlikely, as Barcelona have only failed to score once in their last 12 outings.
Still, this is the Champions League and we’ve seen stranger things happen. It is important Barcelona don’t allow Roma into the game early, so they must prevent an early goal going in order to kill any atmosphere the home crowd may bring.
- Nainggolan is the only doubt for the home side.
- Busquets is the only injury doubt for Barcelons, whilst Coutinho remains cup tied.
Roma Potential Starting XI – Allison; Florenzi, Manolas, Fazio, Kolarov; Pellegrini, Rossi, Strootman; Ünder, Dzeko, Perotti
