The final of Snooker’s second most prestigious championship brings together arguably the two most consistent players of the current season and calendar year. Ronnie O’Sullivan the champion here last year goes for a record breaking seventh UK Championship amazingly twenty-five years on from his first. This current season Ronnie has lost only twice in twenty-seven matches winning the Shanghai Masters and Champion of Champions in the process.
Mark Allen has made his second final seven years on from his first in what has been a superbly consistent year which kicked off by winning a Triple Crown event The Masters last January. This proven winner went on to dominate the China Championship only a month ago.
Key Stats & Facts
- Head 2 Head: Ronnie O’Sullivan 4 – 3 Mark Allen
- Ronnie O’Sullivan – 2/5 @ Marathon Bet
- Mark Allen – 5/2 @ Black Type Bet
I am not convinced either player has been near their best these last two weeks at York and it is testament to their undoubted class that they have been able to reach the final.
No doubt Ronnie has on paper had an easy draw to the final not that matters much given Ronnie’s current professional approach to winning matches with minimum fuss. At times this season it appears he has a new found maturity as a match player and seems content to tough it out when necessary.
Mark Allen has admitted he feels he is struggling with his timing in this event but at the end of matches he has found his best form when it matters. You can be sure this is from the confidence the current season has given him and the fact he now knows what it takes to win a Triple Crown event.
From their head to head the one thing we know is Mark Allen enjoys playing ‘The Rocket’ and is never overwhelmed by the challenge in actual fact he has beaten him in the other two triple crown events on three occasions.
Given I don’t believe either player is at their best I expect we will have a tense final making the total frames the main bet to work in tandem with a small bet on Mark Allen to win the title. Obviously Mark Allen will be second favourite but I’m a little shocked at the price given the dynamics I have mentioned above, however, this is the UK Championship where Ronnie has only lost in one previous final but outside of this championship Ronnie has often been susceptible in major finals over the years often making the likes of John Higgins and Mark Selby value plays at 2/1+.
Let’s see if Mark Allen is in their class.
