It’s an all South Yorkshire affair for Saturday’s tea time game. It features two sides who are doing well in their respective ways.
Rotherham were tipped by many to go straight back down to league 1 but they’ve defied expectations so far to sit in 19th. They’ve done most of their good work at home, remaining unbeaten at the New York Stadium in their last 6 games.
They employ a 4-1-4-1 formation and try to be physical and make the most from set pieces. Paul Warne has a lot of tall players at his disposal with Richard Wood, Clark Robertson, Semi Ajayi and Michael Smith all potential dangers in the air.
Sheffield United are much different in their style. Chris Wilder tends to operate with a fluid 5-3-2 formation but there’s freedom for players to roam around. That’s only doable when players are positionally aware, for instance centre half Jack O’Connell can go join attacks in the final third if he wants and midfielder John Fleck will drop back and fill in. This flexible system makes it difficult for opposition to mark and it’s a feature they’re likely to employ here.
The Blades dominated their other local derby against Wednesday last time out but failed to make the breakthrough. Rotherham will look to frustrate them just as Wednesday did, a draw would be a good result for the home side.
Rotherham are without Sean Raggett and Darren Potter. Will Vaulks is also a doubt.
Sheffield United welcome back John Egan and don’t have any fresh injury concerns.
Potential Rotherham Starting XI: Rodak, Vyner, Robertson, Wood, Mattock, Ajayi, Towell, Manning, Williams, Taylor, Smith.
Potential Sheffield United Starting XI: Henderson, Freeman, O’Connell, Egan, Basham, Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Duffy, McGoldrick, Sharp.
Key Stats & Facts
- Sheffield United are unbeaten in 11 of their last 12 games against Rotherham.
- Rotherham have scored just 4 goals from open play all season.
- United striker Billy Sharp is the most clinical striker in the league, scoring with 37% of his shots this season.
- Rotherham – 22/5
- Draw – 14/5
- Sheffield United – 4/5
I’m inclined to oppose goals here with the line set at a straight 2.5. 10Bet go 13/14 on two or fewer goals been scored and it makes appeal.
I’m also happy to have a go on the half time/full time market. Draw/Sheffield United is available to back at 77/20 (MarathonBet) and I could see that having a good chance. Half time draws are a feature for both these sides, I think Sheffield United have to requisite quality to eventually break down the Millers though.
