Egypt’s World Cup campaign has never recovered from the fitness issues surrounding Mo Salah and the last-minute defeat to Uruguay in the opening game was a huge blow to start the tournament.
That result meant they had to beat Russia in their last game and again they were un-done by an unfortunate own-goal, which ended up being the start of a terrible 15-minute spell that eventually saw them soundly beaten 3-1.
Saudi Arabia had little expectation at this tournament and there two defeats were hardly unexpected. They were thrashed by the hosts in the opener but improved in the game against Uruguay, in which they lost just 1-0.
Both sides are out and this will be their final game at the tournament. Neither will want to finish bottom, especially Egypt, who are the clear favourites to win the game at 10/11.
In a game with nothing riding on it but pride, you would expect both sides to open up slightly and try and play good football. However, Saudi are not a great side and lack quality in the final third, whilst Egypt are defensive minded and have struggled to be clinical in-front of goal, with a Mo Salah penalty in the 3-1 defeat to Russia their only goal at the tournament thus far.
Under 2.5 goals at 4/5 looks a banker here given both sides struggle for goals. Egypt have now gone eight games without a win and have managed just six goals in that period. Salah is their main source for goals, but his fitness issues mean he is not at his best, which is why Egypt have struggled so much. They looked good going forward in their first game but did not have the end product, which makes it difficult to back goals in this game at all.
Saudi have lost five games in a row now, scoring just twice, further adding to the idea this will be a low-scoring game. Egypt have a little bit more going forward in terms of quality and at 10/11, they are the team to side with in this one.
Saudi Arabia will be without Taiseer Al Jassam, who came off before half-time against Uruguay but otherwise, will stick with their side that lost 1-0 to Uruguay.
Egypt’s Tarek Hamed overcame injury to start the last game and will most likely play again here. Mo Salah also played last game despite not looking 100% fit and it will remain to be seen whether he will be risked here.
Potential Saudi Arabia Starting XI: Al-Mayoof; Al-Burayk, Hawsawi, Albulayhi, Shahrani; Al-Mogahwi, Otayf; Bahebri, Faraj, Dawsari; Muwallad
Potential Egypt Starting XI: El-Shenawy; Fathy, Gabr, Hegazi, Shafy; Hamed, Elneny; Salah, Said, Trezeguet; Mohsen
Head To Head
- These two sides have only ever met once before, when Egypt were 1-0 winners in an International Friendly.
Key Stats & Facts
- Saudi Arabia have lost 11 of their total 15 games at World Cups and have not won a game at a World Cup since 1994.
- Egypt have never won a World Cup game.
- Saudi Arabia – 5/1
- Draw – 13/5
- Egypt – 10/11
Neither side will want to finish bottom of the group and Egypt will fancy their chances of earning their first ever win at a World Cup. Saudi Arabia have shown very little to suggest they are capable of winning this game and if Salah starts, the confidence of the side will be that little bit more than the Saudi’s and that should just about see them edge this game. Not expecting goals or a great game but Egypt to pinch it by a goal, probably by a 1-0 score-line.
