Arguably one of the biggest rivalries in women’s tennis history rears its head again in the Round of 16 stage of the French Open, as old foes, Serena and Maria go head-to-head for a place in the quarter-finals.
This is Serena’s first appearance at a major following her spell out of the game whilst pregnant. She is un-seeded for this tournament and has dropped to 451st in the rankings and has played just three tournaments this year in total. Williams is playing her first Grand Slam in 16 months but is still the favourite for this match at 13/18.
As for Sharapova, well she has not played much tennis in the last year either. She had the long lay-off whilst suspended for taking a banned substance in 2016 and has recently had an arm injury to contend with. She had played 19 matches so far this year, winning 12 and losing seven but did play in the Australian Open in January, going out in the third round. She is best priced at 13/10 for this one and goes into the match the ‘underdog’.
The head-to-head record between these two makes for very difficult reading for Sharapova and her fans. It currently reads 18-3 in Williams’ favour and Sharpova has not beaten the American since 2004 and has lost 18-straight matches against her.
On that basis, it is hard to look past Serena here. But Serena is not at her very best, understandably after her time out and has played far fewer tournaments than Sharapova has. The Russian knocked-out sixth seed, Karolina Pliskova, in straight-sets, dropping just three games across the match in an impressive win. She has dropped just one set so far, in the first round but will need to up her game to compete with Serena.
Williams has also dropped just one set and beat 11th seed, Julia Gorges, in straight-sets to get to this match against her fiercest rival. Given Serena is not quite yet at her best and Sharapova has played a bit more tennis, the Russian to win a set at 4/9 could be good value.
Serena has the beating of Sharapova and the history would suggest this should be a straight sets win. However, Sharapova looks back towards her best and could push her close here.
