Sevilla vs Man United Betting Preview
Venue: Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium
Channel: BT Sport
Sevilla will come into the game full of confidence having won their last 3 games and only losing 1 in their last 9. Sevilla have already fared well against English opponents in the competition this year, having held Liverpool to score draws in the group stage. Those two draws were part of a strong group campaign, with their only mishap coming away at Spartak which lead to their only defeat in the 6 group matches.
Despite it not coming in the Champions League, Sevilla still have a wealth of recent success on the European stage having won the Europa League five times since 2006 and more impressively three times in a row between 2014 and 2016. They are no strangers to the big stage and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them outplay their odds here, especially as they have only lost one game on home soil all season.
Man United travel to Spain for their first appearance in the Champions League knockout stages for four years with Mourinho’s side aiming for a positive result to take back to Old Trafford. Like Sevilla, United also enter the game in good form with the reds winning 7 of the last 9 games and losing just 2 of the last 12. United reached the knockouts comfortably thanks to a dominant group campaign which saw them win 5 of their 6 matches, albeit against weaker opposition than others may have faced.
It is worth considering that United have only managed 2 victories in 23 attempts when playing against Spanish opponents in Spain. Though, there has been improvement in recent efforts, losing just 1 in the last 8 visits while actually winning their last match when beating Celta Vigo 1-0 at Balaidos on their way to Europa League success last season. Avoiding defeat here will provide Mourinho with an ideal platform ahead of the second leg.
Correa picked up an injury against Las Palmas at the weekend is unlikely to be fit enough to take part here with Banega also likely to miss out having missed the previous two games. Recent January signing Layun is ineligible after featuring in the group stage for ex side Porto.
Pogba missed the trip to Huddersfield on Saturday with an illness but he is expected to be back and starting here while Ibrahimovic, Hererra and Rashford are also back training and pushing for a start.
