Man City’s UEFA Champions League group stage continues this week, as they face the lengthy trip to Ukraine to face current domestic champions, Shakhtar Donetsk, in Kharkiv.
City began the campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Lyon, followed up by a last minute 2-1 away to Hoffenheim. Shakhtar have drawn both group games so far 2-2, despite leading Lyon 2-0 in their last group F match.
The home side have proven very difficult to play against in Ukraine in the UCL in recent years and have lost just one of their last eight games at home, and that came against Real Madrid, where they lost 4-3. They have scored at least two goals in nine of their last 10 home games in this competition and have scored two goals in each of their opening two games in this group stage so far this season.
As for City, they came into this Champions League as favourites but have looked sloppy thus far; falling 2-0 down at home to Lyon in the first-half, eventually losing 2-1 and went behind after just a minute to Hoffenheim before a last-minute winner rescued their campaign. They now face Shakhtar home and away and will be looking for six points, but this away game poses a real challenge.
Looking at the odds for this game, City at 2/7 looks far too short, especially given Shakhtar beat City at home in the group stage last season and baring in mind their extremely strong form at home in this competition and domestically. Shakhtar at 7/1 certainly appeals but given the obvious quality of City, it would be a slight punt. The double-chance market offer of 113/50 on the home side looks a decent bet and you would also fancy goals here.
Taison is Shakhtar Donetsk’s only injury concern here and looks set to be replaced by Alan Patrick in the number 10 position.
City are hoping Kyle Walker will be ok to play here after missing the game at the weekend and Kevin De Bruyne could again feature from the bench as he continues his return after missing the first few months of the season. Danilo, Ilkay Gundogan and Claudio Bravo are all out injured.
Potential Skakhtar Starting XI: Pyatov; Butko, Khotcholava, Rakitskiy, Ismaily; Maycon, Stepanenko; Marlos, Patrick, Bolbat; Moraes
Potential Man City Starting XI: Ederson; Walker, Kompany, Laporte, Mendy; Silva, Fernandinho, Silva; Sterling, Jesus, Sane
Head To Head
These two sides have only ever played twice, both of which came in the group stage of the Champions League last season. Shakhtar won their home game, whilst City were victorious at the Etihad.
Stats & Facts
- Shakhtar have lost just one of their last 8 home games in the UCL (3-4 vs Real Madrid in 2015).
- There have been over 2.5 goals scored in Man City’s last seven UCL games.
- There have been over 2.5 goals scored in seven of Shakhtar’s last 8 UCL games.
- Shakhtar Donetsk – 7/1
- Draw – 5/1
- Man City – 2/5
This game is likely to be a lot harder than the odds would suggest and is crucial for City, especially as Lyon now have back-to-back games against bottom side Hoffenheim.
Goals have been a feature in both of these two sides games in this competition so far, with BTTS and over 2.5 goals landing in each of these two sides’ opening two games to this group stage.
Shakhtar are very strong at home and always seem to score and whilst City always pose a threat going forward, they are capable of errors and conceding. The value certainly looks to be with the home side and I would not want to oppose them here either.
