This tie looks like one of the most intriguing of the round of 16. Shakhtar performed admirably and outgunned a strong Napoli roster in order to qualify and they fully deserved to. Gaffer Paulo Fonseca has been linked to the Everton job in recent times and he gets his time playing fast, counter attacking football with the likes of Taison, Marlos and the impressive Bernard. The Ukrainian outfit should not be dismissed.
Unfortunately due to political reasons the hosts cannot play at their Donbass Arena base, instead they are playing further North in Kharkiv, that hasn’t stopped them winning all three group stage games. There are two major factors to consider in this leg, one being the fact that Shakhtar are still in their winter break and haven’t played competitive football for a few months. Having said that they are the same boat as a lot of European clubs and arranged competitive friendlies with the likes of Copenhagen, Slavia Prague and Dinamo Zagreb to try and get used to continental opposition. Now, the other vital factor is the weather, it is due to be as cold as -12 degrees in Kharkiv on Wednesday night and Shakhtar are used to playing in this bitterly cold conditions, that cannot be said for their counterparts Roma.
Roma progressed in a tough group with Chelsea and Atletico Madrid and looked strong in the games against Chelsea, they were very lucky to get a draw at the Stadio Olimpico on opening day when Atleti came to town, they also lost the away leg 2-0. Atletico slipped up at home to Chelsea and to Qarabag so Roma can see themselves as quite fortunate to get through. That said, ex-Sassuolo boss Eusebio Di Francesco has settled into life in the capital well after an opening few months where the team lacked much identity, now they have garnered consistency and look a good bet for the top 4. I Giallorossi also have a player in great form in the shape of young Turkish starlet Cengiz Ünder, he has recently being operating on the right wing, a hybrid of a playmaker and an old school ‘beat your man’ winger with a terrific strike on him, the signing from the well regarded sporting director Monchi has been a success and he is one to watch.
I feel Roma will be happy to take a draw back to the Olimpico however Shakhtar have had all winter to prepare for this one and it’s going to be a shock to the system for Roma with the freezing temperatures, therefore I want to keep the hosts onside. It’s pretty even in the 1X2 market so we can get Shakhtar off a scratch 0 start on the Asian Handicap at a shade of odds on, it’s effectively the same as ‘draw no bet’. Shakhtar have seen each of their home group games end in a win and BTTS (2-1, 3-1, 2-1) and the same can be backed at an attractive 9/2.
Maksim Malyshev is the only injury concern for Shakhtar Donetsk.
Alessandro Florenzi is a major doubt for the visitors.
Potential Shakhtar Donetsk Starting XI: Pyatov, Srna, Ordets, Rakitskiy, Ismaily, Stepanenko, Fred, Bernard, Taison, Marlos, Ferrerya.
Potential Roma Starting XI: Ailson, Florenzi, Fazio, Manolas, Kolarov, De Rossi, Nainggolan, Strootman, El Sharraway, Ünder, Dzeko.
