Sheffield United v Cardiff City Betting Preview
Venue: Bramall Lane
Channel: Sky Sports Main Event/Football
After being promoted from League one just a few months earlier, their early season form catapulted Sheffield United into one of the early favourites for promotion. Chris Wilder’s innovative style of play caught much of the division by surprise, and had opposition manager’s frantically searching for a way to combat the Blades gung-ho approach. The season ending injury to central midfielder Paul Coutts, slowly halted all the momentum of the promoted side, seeing them drop from 2nd down to 9th.
Wilder’s side have failed to score in just 5 out of 22 home fixtures this season but defensive frailties have seen their form turn sour – conceding more than all but two of the top half teams in the Championship. Although they are not mathematically unable to mount a push toward the play off places, it would take a huge upturn in form from the Red and White half of Sheffield.
Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock returns to his home town club for Sky’s televised game on Monday evening on an 8 game winning streak. Warnock’s surprise automatic promotion hopefuls have been a force to be reckoned with so far this season, losing just 7 out of their 38 league games. They’re physicality and combative style has seen them perform well at both ends of the pitch, scoring the third most goals whilst also conceding the least.
Before the season began, few would have thought that Warnock’s team of rejects and mavericks could’ve gained enough momentum for a play off push, never mind an automatic promotion place. However in true Warnock style, his Wiley determination to prove doubters wrong appears to be coming to fruition again.
Team News: The home side will be without Chelsea loanee goalkeeper Jamal Blackman through suspension, whilst Cardiff were recently boosted by the return of Icelandic midfielder Aron Gunnarsson.
Potential Sheffield United Starting XI: Moore, Basham, Stearman, O’Connell, Baldock, Leonard, Lundstram, Fleck, Stevens, Sharp, Clarke.
