This year’s French Open Final sees the number 1 seed, Simona Halep, face the American number 10 seed, Sloane Stephens on Saturday afternoon on court Philippe-Chatrier.
The Romanian comes into the match as the favourite at 4/9 and given she is the world number one in the Women’s game, she will see this as a real chance of winning her first ever major.
As for Sloane Stephens, she has been extremely impressive this tournament, dropping just one set so far in her six matches at Roland Garros. She does have a major under her belt, unlike Halep, the US Open win last year and in general has a much better record in tournament finals than her Romanian opponent. She has a 6-0 record in her favour in finals, compared to Halep, who has a 16-14 record in final-round matches in tournaments.
Halep does have the upper-hand over Stephens in their head-to-head. Halep leads 5-2, having beaten her opponent, winning their last four meetings and hasn’t lost to the American since 2013.
Looking a bit more at their form over this current tournament, both have had good campaigns. Halep has dropped just two sets so far, compared to Stephens one, and her win over number 3 seed, Garbine Mugaruza, in the semi-finals, was incredibly impressive. Stephens proved too strong for her fellow American, Madison Keys, winning in straight sets.
Halep has played the stronger opposition thus far in the tournament and that could give her the edge against Stephens in the final.
Stephens is the slight underdog here but it certainly looks a difficult game to call. Halep has history and experience on her side, but Stephens is not one to crack under the pressure and has won every final she has been in so far.
Difficult to predict a winner and two players playing well against each other in the final. The bet I like the look of here is there to be three sets in the match, which you can find best priced at 13/8. Should be a hotly-contested final and make sure to check the various price boosts on offer before the match starts.
