Southampton performed well away at Old Trafford last week and will be hoping for a similar performance with a different result as they welcome a Spurs side that have recently secured a champions league quarter final berth.
No doubt the hosts have improved over the stewardship of Ralph Hassenhuttl, they look a greater threat going forward and his tactics have been a major part of their mini resurgence.
He’s put Nathan Redmond in a more central role up front and has tried to exploit high defensive lines by utilising his pace from an initial deep position. Plenty of times he’s got through into a 1 on 1 situation and it’s no surprise his output has increase since then.
Spurs could welcome back Dele Alli from injury here and his added goal threat has been missed. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have struggled for creativity and created little against Chelsea and Arsenal in the last few weeks.
Their record on the road is strong though and with the title probably out of sight they’ll have all eyes on that 3rd place which would mean guaranteed champions league football as they move into their new stadium next season.
Southampton are without Mario Lemina and Michael Obafemi. Danny Ings remains a doubt.
Harry Winks And Kieran Trippier are doubts for the visitors, Vincent Jansen remains sidelined but Dele Alli could make a return.
Potential Southampton XI: Gunn, Valery, Bednarek, Vestergaard, Yoshida, Bertrand, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Hojberg, Redmond, Austin.
Potential Tottenham XI: Lloris, Aurier, Alderweireld, Verthongen, Rose, Dier, Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen, Son, Kane.
Key Stats & Facts
- Southampton are winless in their last 6 home games versus Spurs.
- Spurs have lost just 1 of their last 13 meetings with the Saints.
- Southampton have lost more points from winning positions than any other side in the league.
- Southampton – 7/2
- Draw – 14/5
- Spurs – 9/10
I’d edge with Spurs here, especially if Alli is back but Southampton have scored in their last 9 home games so I’m happy to go with BTTS at 3/4 (Betway) as a starting point.
I’m also going to have a small play on Spurs to win from behind at 10/1 with SkyBet. As mentioned, the Saints struggle to hold onto leads, throwing away 20 points from winning positions.
I do feel they’ll score though and if they do the pressure will be on Spurs to make the comeback so the 10/1 looks a big price and worth a punt.
