Southampton v Watford Betting Preview
Venue: St Mary’s
Southampton have won just one of their last 12 matches, that came in the previous FA Cup round away at Fulham. Mauricio Pelligrino is odds-on to be the next Premier League manager to leave, with the Saints now sitting in the relegation zone. The pressure may have turned up a notch after Saturday’s opponents Watford sacked Marco Silva, who was originally in the running for the job at St Mary’s.
Indeed, last week Watford dismissed Silva, and brought in Javi Gracia. The Hornets have become known for their frequent managerial changes. Despite winning just one of 11 league games, Watford are still in 10th place, after a fast start to the campaign. Silva worked hard over the summer to add an English core, and it’s no coincidence that a poor run in form coincided with absences of Nathaniel Chalobah, Tom Cleverley, Will Hughes and the experienced Younes Kaboul. Watford have lacked coherence in recent weeks. Although the possibility of the ‘new manager effect’ may come into play, the fight and drive of the opening months of the season hasn’t be present recently.
We can use that in our favour here. Pelligrino fielded a strong side at Craven Cottage, and given he needs a win, the Saints should have enough quality on show here. They have a strong squad regardless of changes, and may have picked up confidence after a decent performance against Spurs on Sunday.
Charlie Austin remains out for Southampton.
Heurelho Gomes and Troy Deeney are set to remain out. Tom Cleverley faces a late fitness test.
Potential Southampton Starting XI: Forster; Cedric, Yoshida, Stephens, McQueen; Romeu, Davies, Hojbjerg; Ward-Prowse, Carrillo, Redmond
