Manchester City travel to Stoke on Monday evening, knowing a victory will edge them one step closer to securing Premier League glory this season.
With neighbours Manchester United beating Liverpool on Saturday, City know that two victories away to Stoke and Everton will leave their derby day clash with United an imperative one indeed. 3 more points against their local rivals will secure their Premier League success mathematically, though it could be argued the league was decided some time ago.
It’s been a record breaking season for Pep Guardiola and his City side, they’ll be hopeful of hitting over 100 goals to add to the list of achievements they’ve already secured in this campaign. Once the league is settled though, there’s a strong consensus that City could rest players for the final weeks of the season. They’re yet to lift a European Cup and will be more than aware of their chances of glory in this season’s Champions League. Their 2-1 home defeat to FC Basel last time out left a lot to be desired however, though their were a total of 9 changes made to the side that played Chelsea last weekend.
Their opponents on Monday, Stoke, will view this game as one in which they have nothing to lose. Their 7-2 drubbing at the Etihad earlier in the season was sign that they needed changes defensively, but it is in fact a change in manager that has helped them resolve their problems somewhat. Paul Lambert’s region has seen them concede just four goals in six games, with the 23 games prior to that seeing them ship 50 goals in total, a vast improvement.
They have gone 5 games without a win however. Draws against Brighton, Leicester, Watford and Southampton are certainly a step in the right direction for the Potters, but realistically they need to be collecting all 3 points in the big games against the sides surrounding them. With the visits of Manchester City and Spurs and away trips to Arsenal and Liverpool still on Paul Lambert’s agenda, he’ll be eager to get some victories on the board to avoid his side’s fate going to the final day the season when they travel to Swansea.
A big 8 weeks approaching for Stoke, but for me they’ve got the quality to steer themselves clear of the drop come the business end of the season.
Diouf, Ireland and Grant remain the only absentees for Stoke.
Delph, Fernandinho and Sterling remain doubtful, Mendy nears return.
Stoke Potential Starting XI: Butland, Bauer, Indi, Zouma, Stafylidis, Cameron, Allen, N’Diaye, Shaqiri, Crouch, Choupo-Mouting
Man City Potential Starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Otamendi, Kompany, Zinchenko, Gundogan, Silva, De Bruyne, B Silva, Aguero, Sane
