Relegation threatened Swansea City host top-4 chasing Chelsea this weekend in this crucial Premier League fixture in South-Wales.
With both sides fighting at different ends of the table, this game has huge implications for both. Swansea sit just a place above the drop-zone, four points clear of Stoke and Southampton but with Southampton playing at home to Bournemouth this Saturday, that gap could be cut to just the single point.
As for Chelsea, they are five points away from fourth place and Champions League football next season. A win here is paramount if they are to stay in contention, especially given they face Liverpool next weekend. They travel to a side scrapping for survival, so this game looks like it could be a tough one for Antonio Conte’s men.
Swansea have not won any of their last five games and were thumped 5-0 by Manchester City last weekend. Despite the poor run in all, Swansea’s home form in 2018 has been almost perfect, with four wins in their last six, beating the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Burnley. Their last defeat at home came right at the start of the year, in a 2-0 loss to Spurs, so they are capable of getting at least a point here this weekend.
As for Chelsea, they managed to secure their place in this year’s FA Cup final last weekend with a 2-0 win over Southampton at Wembley. That result means they can concentrate on making the top four but that hope will be all but over if they fail to win here, especially given the form of Liverpool and Spurs ahead of them. Conte’s men have won just three of their last eight away games but have won their last two on the road, against Burnley and Southampton. Their away form has not been brilliant this season and in general, their season has been a disappointing one all in all. A top four and an FA Cup win would change that, however, but Swansea will be no push-over.
Chelsea have actually failed to win on their last two visits to the Liberty Stadium but do hold a good record over the Welsh side. They have lost just once since Swansea joined the Premier League. Goals are often the theme though in this fixture, with over 2.5 goals in five of the last seven meetings but only one of the last five games in all competitions to be held at the Liberty has seen BTTS.
Tammy Abraham is unable to play due to the loan agreement, whilst Renato Sanchez is not considered fit enough to play. Federico Fernandez was injured during last weekend’s game against Man City, so is a doubt for this game also.
Chelsea are still without David Luiz and Ethan Ampadu, whilst Marcus Alonso is suspended.
Potential Swansea City Starting XI: Fabianski; Naughton, Hoorn, Mawson, Olsson; Ayew, King, Sun-Yeung, Carroll, Clucas; Ayew
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Cahill, Rudiger; Moses, Kante, Fabregas, Emerson; Willian, Hazard, Morata
