This game has the makings to be a blow out with a playoff contender going to a struggling team with a rookie quarterback.

The Jets have at least showed signs of life in recent weeks, making this game worth at least watching the first half of to see if it can be interesting.

Ultimately though, the Texans defensive might should be too much for the Jets to handle. Then again, the Jets performed solidly against a good Bills defence in Buffalo last week.

A lot will fall on the hands of Darnold given the success of the Texans against the run game this season. That might be too much for the rookie to deal with on Saturday.

The Texans offence has yet to really click and on the road in the elements they have struggled at times. They barely scraped through in Denver and Washington and they even look anaemic at home last week against the Colts.

The Jets have struggled against the run game this season and that has been an area of success in the last few weeks for the Texans. The Jets pass defence has been better but even then they generally rank in the middle of the road so they are not going to be shutting this passing offence down.

Team News

Offensively for the Jets Elijah McGuire, Isaiah Crowell and Quincy Enunwa all missed practice. The Jets are going to need every weapon they have available to them and any of those guys missing will really hurt them. The good news is that Sam Darnold was a full participant and at this stage would be expected to start.

The Texans had everyone take some part in practice and generally being limited on the first day of practice is more about resting niggles than a full blow injury.

Head To Head

  • The New York Jets are 5-2 against the Houston Texans all-time.
  • The Texans have won the last two games by an average of 6.5 points. However, they have not faced each other since 2015.
  • The Jets have not beaten the Texans since 2010.

Key Stats & Facts

  • The Houston Texans rank third in league in rushing yards and the Jets rank 27th in the league in preventing rushing yards.
  • The Houston Texans offense rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards but the Jets rank 30th in passing yards, touchdowns and interceptions.

Betting Odds

  • Houston Texans 2/5
  • New York Jets 9/4

The Verdict

I expect the Texans to come into this game angry after their loss last week to the Colts. Their 10-game winning streak was snapped, and they lost the chance to move into the #2 seed.

Additionally, I just cannot see how the Jets attack them. The Texans are smothering run games and the Jets passing offence is not great with either QB under centre right now.

The Texans should be able to get back to running the ball and controlling the game. At some point this Jets team is possibly not going to keep fighting in a meaningless game against a non-division opponent. I think the Texans will cover the 6.5 point spread available at Bet365 for even odds.

41.5 points is not a huge amount, but I have already said I struggle to see the Jets putting up many points as attacking this defence will be tough.

I also think the Texans want to control this game on the ground, so they will run a lot and just look to go on the road and get the win. Therefore, I would back the under in this game. By the same theory I would back Lamar Miller to find the end zone at least once this week. Additionally, as an outside bet the Houston DST or Deshaun Watson to score touchdowns feels like an interesting bet at slightly longer odds.
