Tottenham will be buoyed by their recent form ahead of their tie with Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Tottenham have won all their last five matches in all competitions, their last loss coming against current premier league champions and leaders so far this season, Manchester City. They most recently defeated the ‘undefeatables’, Chelsea, 3-1. That was the Blues’ first loss this season in all competitions, as Spurs still look unlikely to qualify through the Champions League group stage.
This fixture against Inter Milan is a must win for Tottenham. Anything less than victory will leave Inter Milan all but out of reach. The Italian side are three points adrift of Spurs ahead of this game with a better goal difference to match, while Spurs have only group leaders Barcelona to face after this.
Just one victory for Spurs so far in the Champions League, a 2-1 victory over bottom of the pile, PSV Eindhoven, a slightly better result than the 2-2 draw in the first leg. Both these results came following defeats to both Barcelona and the first leg against Inter Milan.
Inter’s victory over Tottenham, and their surprise draw against Barcelona, gives them the advantage over Spurs in this group, albeit only three points. Their final game is against bottom side PSV Eindhoven, meaning Tottenham could get victory here and still not qualify ahead of Inter, mainly thanks to one man.
Mauro Icardi has three goals in Inter’s four matches so far in this competition, including one in the previous fixture between these two sides.
Moussa Dembele, Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier and Davinson Sanchez are all out through injury for the home side.
Inter have a full squad available.
Potential Tottenham Starting XI:Lloris, Davies, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Aurier, Dier, Sissoko, Eriksen, Alli, Lamela, Kane
Potential Inter Milan Starting XI: Handanovic, D’Ambrosio, Skriniar, Miranda, Asamoah, Vecino, Brozovic, Politano, Nainggolan, Perisic, Icardi
Head To Head
- These two sides have met each other six times, with three victories apiece.
Key Stats & Facts
- The first fixture between these two sides finished 2-1 to Inter Milan.
- Should Tottenham fail to win this match, they will trail second place Inter by atleast three points and a worse goal difference with just one match remaining.
- Tottenham 5/6
- Draw 63/20
- Inter Milan 19/5
Given the previous result between these two sides, as well as Tottenham’s lackluster performance so far in this competition, Inter are over-priced, for me.
Mauro Icardi has three goals in four matches in this competition and with Tottenham having to push for victory, they could well be exploited by this mans pace.
Sports include football, boxing and cricket. As a 5-year-old supporting Doncaster Rovers, my Saturdays consisted of leaning up against a cold brick wall away at teams like Forest Green Rovers. I never expected then to be sat three tiers high at Wembley watching James Hayter score the only goal in the League One play-off final against Leeds to put pub team Donny into the second tier of English football. Journalism is just my plan to get to the good seats.
