Rangers make the mammoth trip to the Republic of Bashkortostan to take on Ufa. Many will be unaware of the Russian side and understandably so. They were only founded in 2010 and have stormed through from the third division up to the first. Ufa finished the last domestic season in 6th place and only made the qualifying stages of the Europa League due to Russian cup winners FC Tosno failing to apply for a UEFA license in requisite time, thus passing it on to the 6th place side.
Ufa progressed through their last two ties against Slovenian side Domzale and Luxembourg's finest Progres Niederkorn by the skin of their teeth. They lost the first leg 1-0 at Ibrox and were dominated in that encounter. I'm expecting the Glasgow side to try to keep things tight in deepest Russia.
Steven Gerrard has yet to be on the losing side since his appointment at Rangers, but he's got a massive Old Firm game at the weekend which major focus will be on as the first test of his managerial credentials. I wouldn't expect mass changes as this is also a big game, especially from a financial point of view. Should Gerrard get through this one then it could boost the coffers for deadline day signings.
Ufa cannot call upon Lovro Bizjak who is ineligible for the competition. Young striker Yerkebulan Seydakhmet is back in contention after injury.
Ross McCrorie returns from his domestic ban to be back in the reckoning for the away side. Borna Barasic is ineligible and injuries to Jamie Murphy, Jordan Rossiter and Graham Doran's will keep them out.
Potential Ufa Starting XI: Belenov, Zhivoglyadov, Nedelcearu, Alikin, Tabidze, Jokic, Paurevic, Salatic, Vanek, Oblyakov, Igboun.
Potential Rangers Starting XI: McGregor, Tavernier, Katic, Goldson, Flanagan, Jack, Ejaria, Arfield, Candeias, Kent, Morelos.
Head To Head
- Unsurprisingly with the short history of Ufa, and this being their first foray into Europa, they have never met before the first leg.
Rangers should have just enough to progress through to the group stages here. They didn't concede an away goal in the first leg which is a positive, but Ufa rarely threatened and would've ended up happy with just the 1 goal deficit coming into their home leg.
I'm expecting a tight opening here and that makes the 33/20 appeal on the 0-0 correct score. At a much bigger price we can delve into the HT/FT market and back HT Draw/FT Rangers at the odd price of 34/5.
If it is a tight first half then Ufa will have to come out and attack in the 2nd and I'm not sure they have the quality to break down Rangers and that could leave space to be cut open late in the game and Rangers have the counter attacking pace in Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to seal the tie.
