Top spot is up for grabs in group A, hosts Russia only need a point to do that whereas Uruguay would have to win to snatch it. Russia have so far proved their doubters wrong, and there were plenty of them. Scoring 8 goals and conceding 1 so far is a healthy return, a lot of those goals have been quite late in the games which could put a bit of extra shine on their record.

Uruguay have been a bit more attritional in their performances with two 1-0 victories. Defensively they’re sound with the Atlético Madrid duo at centre half performing as they do in the Spanish capital, however their much talked about young and exciting midfield have failed to excel so far. Player for player Uruguay are a much better side so I’m slightly surprised to see them chalked up as big as 9/5, I’d expect that their price for this game pre-tournament would’ve been significantly shorter.

Russia have done well in their first two games, showing dynamism going forward and ruthless finishing however they’ve played two really poor sides and Uruguay present a much stiffer test in both boxes and that could prove pivotal.

Team News

Jose Giménez is ruled out with a thigh problem which is a blow for La Celeste. Manager Oscar Tabárez has come out and said he will not be resting his major players so don’t expect to much rotation.

Russia have no new injury concerns from their last game.

Potential Russia Starting XI: Akinfeev, Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov, Gazinsky, Zobnin, Samedov, Golovin, Cheryshev, Dzyuba.

Potential Uruguay Starting XI: Muslera, Varela, Godín, Coates, Cáceres, Sanchez, Vecino, Bentancur, Rodríguez, Suárez, Cavani.

Head To Head

  • Russia (previously Soviet Union) have won 6, drew 1 and lost 1 in their 8 meetings with Uruguay.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Russia have lost their last four games against South American opposition.
  • Uruguay have won their last 2 against European opposition at the World Cup (England and Italy).

Betting Odds

  • Russia – 2/1
  • Draw – 21/10
  • Uruguay – 9/5

The Verdict

Uruguay will want to win this to finish top, but Russia would happily take a draw so to get just under even money for Uruguay off a scratch 0 start looks attractive. This Russia defence isn’t great and hasn’t been tested yet, Suárez and Cavani will make them work. Uruguay +0 asian handicap works exactly the same as the ‘draw no bet’ market, you get paid out should Uruguay win but stakes are returned if it ends all square.

Recommended Bets

  • Uruguay +0 asian handicap – 10/11 (188 bet)
