US Open 2018: Serena Williams v Naomi Osaka Betting Preview & Tips

23-time Grand Slam Champion, Serena Williams, takes on 20-year-old Naomi Osaka from Japan, who is making her first appearance in a major final.

The betting for this match has Serena as the out-and-out favourite at 3/7 here, with Osaka at 12/5 for a shock victory. In the semi-finals, I did think Osaka would be beaten by Madison Keys, so I am reluctant to go against her again here, but, Serena Williams is a different animal and Osaka will have to step up her performance again is she is to shock the American.

Her record in Grand Slam finals speaks for itself. This is her 31st Grand Slam final and she has won 23 of those, losing on just seven occasions, however, she did lose in her last final, at Wimbledon, to Angelique Kerber in straight sets. That match will give Osaka confidence that she can be beaten in finals and, given she is so young, she will go into this with little pressure on her shoulders and hopefully she throws caution to the wind and really goes for it.

Serena is an incredible athlete and her power can sometimes be too much for players, no matter how good her opponent is. However, as we saw in her Wimbledon final in July, Serena is still on the comeback from her time out of the game and her fitness is surely still questionable. Osaka’s return game is key here, as she needs to get the ball back into play as much as possible and she needs to move Williams around the court, just like Kerber did in the Wimbledon final.

No doubt, Williams needs to have an off day for Osaka to profit and Osaka must play her best match. Before her time out, this game would have been a foregone conclusion but at the moment, you would think there was a chance for the young Japanese player here and I think it would be foolish to count her out here. Osaka has only ever played Serena once and that was this year, which the Japanese player won, so that would again give her confidence.

Looking at the betting for this one, it is difficult to call, as Serena Williams is too short to back in the winner market. Historically, the US Open Women’s final rarely goes to three sets, with only four of the last 20 finals going to a final set. However, in the last six years, three have gone all the way and Serena has been involved in two of those three and I think this might be closer than normal, so backing three sets is the way to go here for me. You can find that bet at 13/8 with SkyBet.

I am going to go brave with the winner, as I backed Serena at Wimbledon in the summer and she struggled there and against a youngster in Osaka, who will move her around and battle hard. I think Osaka has the game to trouble Serena and I am going to back her for the win here at 12/5 with SkyBet.
