Wigan v Man City Betting Preview
Venue: DW Stadium (Wigan)
Channel: BBC One
Manchester City make the short trip to the DW Stadium on Monday evening, where they take on Wigan in the FA Cup 5th round. City fans will feel the urge for revenge following the Latics last gasp winner in 2013’s FA Cup final, that game marking the end of the Roberto Mancini era.
Manuel Pellegrini replaced the Italian that summer, bringing City two league cups and another Premier League title. However, their current situation under Pep Guardiola presents a fantastic opportunity to clean sweep four trophies should they continue the fine form they’ve shown so far this season.
The Premier League title is all but in the bag, with City also making their first trip to Wembley next weekend against Arsenal in the league cup final. Their midweek demolition away to FC Basel stands them in excellent stead for Champions League progression, and should they find a way past Wigan on Monday night, they’ll find themselves in just one step away from an FA cup semi final at Wembley.
Wigan will be confident though, they sit 2nd in league two with two games in hand on leaders Shrewsbury, leaving their chances of automatic promotion looking promising. Manager Cook will be wary of his sides slight dip in form of late though, with two defeats in their last two league outings against Southend and Blackpool.
Striker Will Grigg is set to start, he’s scored 6 goals so far in this season’s FA Cup, including a brace in the last round against West Ham United. The Irons were Wigan’s second Premier League scalp of the competition so far, after taking Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side back to the DW for a replay, where they won 3-0 after a 2-2 draw on the south coast. Can the Latics complete a truly remarkable hat trick of FA Cup upsets in this season’s campaign? Or will the imperious Manchester City prove too mountainous a task as the competition approaches its business end? Enjoy the game.
Cole, Vaughan and Daniels are all cup tied for Wigan, though Powell and Grigg are in line to start. Morsy is serving a suspension.
Benjamin Mendy remains absent. Silva and Sane could return to the starting line up. Jesus is back in training.
Wigan Potential Starting XI: Walton, Byrne, Dunkley, Burn, James, Power, Walker, Jacobs, Massey, Powell, Grigg
Man City Potential Starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Otamendi, Laporte, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Silva, De Bruyne, B Silva, Aguero, Sterling
