The UEFA Champions League is Europe's (and arguably the world's) premier domestic club football competition. The tournament, which spans 11 months of the year from the first qualifying round in July up to the coveted Final the following May, features 32 teams who must battle it out to become Europe's best football club.
The proper Champions League tournament begins with the Group Stages in September each year. All 32 participating teams are assigned to different groups of 4 teams each based on their club coefficient score. After playing each of their opponents twice (both Home and Away), the top two teams will progress to the Round of 16, while third placed teams are demoted to the Europa League, and fourth placed teams are eliminated.
The Round of 16 is a knockout round where teams are again randomly drawn against each other and play both Home and Away with the losing team being eliminated. This process is repeated for the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals until only 2 teams remain. These teams will face off in the Champions League Final, with the winner being crowned as champions of this prestigious competition.
