Liam Manning’s tenure at Carrow Road has come to an end, and the hunt for his replacement is on, with the bookies opening markets on the next Norwich City manager just hours after his dismissal.
It’s been a sacking some weeks in the making. Norwich are on a dismal run of form that’s seen them lose eight of their last ten Championship games and have yet to pick up a single point at home this season. A 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester City on Saturday saw the Canaries slip to 23rd in the league, four points from safety and in desperate need of a change.
That change has arrived. Sporting Director Ben Knapper released a statement via the club's official website acknowledging that it had been a difficult period for the club: “Given the recent run of results and performances, we have been left with no choice but to make this change at this stage”.

Gary O’Neil – 6/4 Favourite
Gary O’Neil has opened in the market as the favourite to be the next Norwich City manager. The ex-Norwich midfielder (2014-16) has been out of work since his stint at Wolves ended in December 2024. He has, however, been tipped for multiple managerial vacancies recently, suggesting that he could be poised to return to management sooner rather than later.
It would surely be a dream appointment for City fans, given his vital Premier League experience at both Bournemouth and Wolves, where he’s come in at crisis points to steady sinking ships and ultimately, got results to keep them in the league. It would be the blueprint here, but the question would be whether O’Neil thinks his stock is higher than a Championship relegation battle?
Throwing a spanner in the works would be the imminent opening of the Middlesbrough job after Rob Edwards looks set to leave for Wolves. He’s also one of the favourites to take charge on Teesside, a club that is on a much more positive upward trajectory. At 6/4, this is likely one to avoid, for now.
Brendan Rodgers – 3/1
Brendan Rodgers has only been out of work for a little over a fortnight since leaving Celtic at the end of October. He’s a serial winner and has an impressive CV from his time in Scotland, but also Liverpool, Swansea City and Leicester City in the Premier League.
He would bring instant authority to the club. A no-nonsense coach with a clear methodology, who long-term would be an epic name to have on the touchline at Carrow Road. But is this a move that Rodgers would be keen to take?
It looks doubtful. Going from challenging for Scottish league titles and rubbing shoulders with Europe’s elite every season is a significant drop off to battling to stay in the Championship. Like O’Neil, if Rodgers had the chance to pick between Norwich and Middlesbrough right now, it’s the latter every time. At 3/1, it’s another name we’d skip for the next Norwich City manager.
Michael Carrick – 4/1
If Norwich want a manager to keep them up and build a project to get them back to the top of the Championship, then Michael Carrick is the name they should go for. He was unfairly forced out of Middlesbrough in June 2025 after establishing the club in the top half of the Championship, tantalisingly close to play-off spots and that elusive Premier League golden ticket.
His quality as a coach is among the best, and while young, he has already proven himself willing to develop players, rather than just spending to buy the league. This will fit well with Sporting Director Knapper and the rest of the board.
Carrick is a free agent, so compensation won’t be an issue, and his wage demands will be considerably lower than those of both O’Neil and Rodgers. At 4/1, this is the value play, and if it gets done, it would be an excellent fit for both the manager and the club.
