Will Still’s time at St Mary’s has come to an end after the board informed the former Reims and Lens head coach that his services were no longer required. Markets for the next Southampton manager odds are starting to open, and we’re looking ahead to see who could replace Still and get the Saints out of a pretty dire mess that they find themselves in.

Next Southampton Manager Odds - Will Still Southampton Manager
Southampton manager Will Still was sacked on Sunday evening as the markets open for his replacement

Still’s appointment in May 2025 (after Southampton’s relegation to the Championship) was seen as a bold, modern reset after a chaotic year. He lasted just five months in the role, having won just two of 13 Championship matches, and a 2-0 home defeat against Preston was the final nail in the coffin for the board, who then announced that Still had departed the club on Sunday evening.

Attention now turns toward his successor, with the likes of Russell Martin, Ralph Hasenhüttl and Michael Carrick amongst the early favourites.

Russell Martin – 3/1 BetVictor

Could Dragan Šolak make a U-turn and reappoint Russell Martin for a second term? He’s opened in the next Southampton manager odds as the 3/1 favourite, and if the board are keen to get a firefighter in and someone who knows the club, then Martin will be a strong contender.

He was the mastermind behind the club's promotion charge to the Premier League in 2023/24, but was fired in December 2024, having achieved just one win in sixteen league games. He later got the job at Rangers on a three-year deal, but lasted just four months and became the shortest-serving manager in Rangers’ history in the process.

There’s no doubt that the fee to remove Still would have been substantial, so the Saints board won’t want to have to fork out twice. Martin not being at a club means initial financial outlay will be minimal, and at 3/1, it looks a big price early doors.

Ralph Hasenhüttl – 4/1 BetVictor

Another former Southampton boss is next on the list. Ralph Hasenhüttl spent four years at St Mary's and enjoyed some good times at the club, none more so than topping the Premier League at the beginning of November in 2020, albeit briefly.

The Austrian has only worked for 14 months since leaving in 2022 – VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga – so the board may be reluctant to run it back here. Odds of 4/1 look a little short for this move to happen, and there’s better value elsewhere in the market.

Michael Carrick – 5/1 BetVictor

Michael Carrick ticks all the boxes, and at 5/1, he’s our pick for the next Southampton manager. He took Middlesbrough from mid-table to the play-offs in 2023 on a shoestring budget and would instil an instant aura of calm around the first team and the wider club.

On top of that, he has a point to prove. Getting sacked by Boro in June 2025 felt incredibly harsh given how much he’d improved the club from top to bottom. Southampton need someone who knows how to win in the Championship and can help them return to the Premier League sooner rather than later. Carrick, for us, can do all of that, and we’re expecting odds of 5/1 to drop quickly as the market starts to develop. From these early BetVictor prices, this is the value play.
