Popular Serie A Betting Markets

Both before and during thbbe Serie A season, you can place a variety of outright bets. These are bets placed on the final results of a sports tournament, rather than on a single game or match. Keep in mind that odds will fluctuate over the course of the season, depending on how events unfold. This means that if you wait too long to wager, you might miss out on valuable odds.

It’s also worth pointing out that many bookmakers will offer you the chance to cash out your outright bets if you feel the need to. In addition to the outright bets we’ll list below, there are also plenty of Serie A match bets that can be placed, as well as specials.

Serie A Winner

This is simply a wager on the overall winner of the competition. Juventus usually triumph in this category, having incredibly clinched their 9th consecutive Serie A title in the 19/20 season. However, they were run close by Inter and Atalanta, so a cheeky punt against Juventus may well provide good value.

Serie A Winner Without Juventus

It will be hard for many of you to look beyond Juventus given their recent dominance. Who can blame you? With this market, however, we can simply pretend Juventus do not exist. The team that finishes with most points outside of Juventus will therefore be crowned as the winner.

Top Goal Scorer

If you want to divert away from team betting, Top Goal Scorer is the market for you. This market gives you the opportunity to wager on the individual who will top the goal-scoring charts at the end of the season. There are a few things to look out for while sizing up your options:

  • Form from previous years. This will help you to become familiar with the strikers who have proven they have an eye for goal.
  • The team they play for. Although this is an individual award, winners usually play for high-scoring teams because these teams naturally create more chances.
  • Do they take penalties? If so, this is a huge advantage in their favour. In the 19/20 season, top scorer Ciro Immobile scored a whopping 41.7% of his Serie A goals from the spot.

To Finish Top 4

The top 4 teams at the end of each Serie A season qualify for the prestigious UEFA Champions League the following season. This is widely regarded to be the most important title at club level. As you’d expect, this means the race for top 4 in Serie A is a fierce battle and a thrilling market to bet on.

To Be Relegated

At the end of each season, three teams face the ignominious fate of relegation from Serie A. The relegation battle usually makes for great drama, and not only will punting on this market give you an extra incentive to follow it, but there is also potential for great value. It’s important to note that many bookmakers will also offer you the option to bet on teams to avoid relegation, if that’s more up your street.

Tournament Structure for Serie A

The league consists of 20 teams who play each other twice, on a home and away basis, therefore playing a total of 38 matches over the course of a season. As is the case in other football leagues, teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and none for a loss. All accrued points are entered into a league table format and at the end of the season, the team with most points are crowned as the champions.

Moreover, at the end of the year the top 4 ranked teams earn the right to participate in the UEFA Champions League. The teams finishing 5th and 6th, along with the winner of the Coppa Italia, qualify for the UEFA Europa League Tournament.  In the case that the winner of the Coppa Italia also finishes in the top 4, the 7th placed team will take part in the Europa League qualifiers.

On the other end of the spectrum, the three teams at the bottom of the table are automatically relegated to the Serie B, the second tier of Italian football. Three teams from Serie B are promoted to the Serie A to replace them.

Teams can buy and sell players during transfer windows, of which there are two throughout the year. One takes place during the summer months, and the other takes place mid-season, in January.

Games usually take place on Saturday and Sunday, with a limited amount of fixtures being contested on weekday evenings. A one-week winter break, during which no matches are played, will occurs once a season. The Coppa Italia is the main domestic cup competition in Italy.

History of the Serie A

The Serie A’s existence stretches as far back as 1898, although it was played as a regional competition at the time. In 1929 it was restructured, allowing teams from all over the country to take part. A total of 18 clubs participated in the competition that season, with Inter Milan (formerly known as Ambrosiana) winning the Scudetto (“small shield” in Italian).

For every ten titles won, a club is allowed to display a golden star above their club badge. Juventus, having won the league an astounding 36 times, currently have 3 stars, while Milan and Inter both have 1.
