Johan Cruyff Trophy 2026: Our Top 5 Favourites

There are five candidates for the coach of the year trophy 2026. Here are our thoughts on each one’s claim to the title. Should odds for this award become available at one of the best football betting sites ahead of the ceremony we will publish them here.

Luis de la Fuente

Luis de la Fuente masterminded Spain to their second FIFA World Cup win. While La Roja boast a number of genuine world-class talents and had two of the best players in the tournament in Rodri and Lamine Yamal, the side were exceptionally well drilled and much of that is down to De la Fuente. Spain monopolised possession in most matches and simply squeezed the life out of opponents with their passing. Their defence was rock solid, conceding only once in the duration of the tournament. The World Cup has been no flash in the pan either. Spain won the Euros two years ago under De la Fuente and have gone a staggering 41 matches unbeaten, their last loss coming in March 2024. We think that De la Fuente will eclipse the considerable achievements of the club coaches in contention to lift the Ballon d’Or coach of the year.

Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique lifted the Johan Cruyff Trophy in 2025 after leading PSG to their maiden Champions League win. In a non-World Cup year, the former Barcelona and Spain midfielder could have been looking at winning the Ballon d’Or coach of the year award again after his PSG side retained the Champions League and Ligue 1 titles. Enrique’s spell in charge of Barcelona proved that he is a quality coach and the way he has turned PSG from a set of expensively assembled superstars into a highly effective top-quality winning machine is admirable. He would be a worthy winner but De la Fuente’s international achievements may just trump him.

Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to their first title win since 2024 and went some way to shaking off the unfair tag of bridesmaids that had been levelled at the Gunners. Critics had claimed that Arteta and his team lacked substance when the chips were down. However, their Premier League campaign last season saw them grind out win after win to finish top of the pile. Arsenal also enjoyed a run to the Champions League final where they just fell short against Enrique’s PSG side, and they were also runners-up in the Carabao Cup when they were edged out by Manchester City. Arteta deserves recognition for developing and improving a team over a number of seasons and for Arsenal’s consistency in 2025/26. However, whether the judges rank this above a World Cup win (De la Fuente) or a back-to-back Champions League and domestic league double (Enrique) is debatable.

Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany steered Bayern Munich to the domestic double, plus the German Super Cup. The Bavarian giants also impressed in the Champions League, reaching the semi-final before exiting in a hugely entertaining two-leg tie with PSG. Kompany’s achievements are impressive; however, Bayern have won a number of domestic doubles down the years. Had he landed the Champions League he may have been in with a shout. We think he may fall short this year.

Unai Emery

Unai Emery has done a fantastic job at Aston Villa, especially when you consider the constraints of PSR. Winning the Europa League capped an excellent season for Villa and Emery will be delighted to rubber-stamp his time at Villa Park with a trophy. Emery managed his squad extremely well and had Villa lost the final they would still have qualified for the Champions League via their league position. Emery may well deserve the award when you look at resources and expectations. However, we feel that the judges will look more towards league titles, the Champions League and the World Cup when picking the best performing coach.

Johan Cruyff Trophy Past Winners

The Ballon d’Or coach of the year award is a new trophy, with 2026 being the third year. Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid) won the inaugural award in 2024, and Luis Enrique (Paris Saint-Germain) collected the men’s Johan Cruyff Trophy in 2025.

Origins of Johan Cruyff Trophy

The men’s and women’s coach of the year awards were introduced to the Ballon d’Or ceremony in 2024. The award is named after Johan Cryuff, a three-time Ballon d'Or winner during his playing career and an innovative coach with Ajax and Barcelona who won the European Cup in 1992. The coach of the year award is judged on titles won, tactical innovation, team development and fair play.
