Yashin Trophy 2026: Our Top 5 Favourites
We have provided a little more detail on the five favourites for the goalkeeper Ballon d’Or. The best football betting sites have not published their Yashin Trophy betting odds at the time of writing. We will add these to the page should they become available. Here is our take on the leading contenders.
Unai Simón
Unai Simón was Spain's first-choice goalkeeper in their World Cup-winning campaign, keeping seven clean sheets in eight matches. The World Cup has been the rule rather than the exception for Simón and Spain. Luis de la Fuente’s side are currently on a record-breaking 41 match unbeaten run and the Athletic Bilbao custodian has played a big part in this. Simón had a solid season in La Liga with Athletic Club and is our pick to land the goalkeeper of the year award.
Matvey Safonov
Matvey Safonov had big gloves to fill when he replaced Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Paris Saint-Germain goal. The Russia international responded by having a superb season as PSG retained their Ligue 1 and Champions League titles. Safonov’s sweeper-keeper style proved to be ideally suited to Luis Enrique’s side and while other contenders might have better stats in terms of clean sheets his overall impact on the team is what sets him apart. Russia did not feature at the World Cup so Safonov couldn’t be compared to the other top goalies during the summer showpiece. In a non-World Cup year his performances for PSG might have seen him win but we feel he will miss out.
David Raya
David Raya was outstanding in Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign. He kept 19 clean sheets with an average of 1.62 saves per 90 minutes and was awarded the Golden Glove. Raya also impressed in Arsenal’s run to the Champions League final. Raya was part of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad, however, Simón remains first choice for La Roja and is rated as a better choice than his compatriot for the Yashin Trophy betting in 2026.
Joan García
Joan Garcia kept 15 clean sheets and, according to our Kickform stats, averaged 2.47 saves per 90 minutes as Barcelona won La Liga. Garcia also impressed during Barcelona’s Champions League campaign with 2.36 saves per 90 minutes. Garcia has six caps for Spain, however, like Raya, he has been unable to dislodge Simón as first-choice goalkeeper for Spain. Again, we think he is likely to miss out to the Athletic Club goalkeeper for the Yashin Trophy 2026.
Gregor Kobel
Gregor Kobel’s 2025/26 season may have been light on silverware compared to his rivals for the goalkeeper of the year award. However, a superb season in the Bundesliga which saw the Dortmund man lead the way for clean sheets and an impressive World Cup campaign for Switzerland (only three goals conceded in five matches) have earned Kobel his second nomination for the Yashin Trophy. Kobel’s numbers are impressive, however, the selection process for Ballon d’Or awards focuses on trophy wins alongside performances, with heavy weighting given to the Champions League and the World Cup. We think that others, including Simón, Safonov and Raya will finish above Kobel.
Yashin Trophy Past Winners
Check out the past Yashin Trophy winners. The inaugural goalkeeper of the year award was given in 2019 with Alisson Becker taking the honours and was won by Gianluigi Donnarumma in 2025. Check out the Yashin Trophy winners list below.
