We have used our stats hub to thoroughly research each fixture to produce our picks. Let’s look at each match.
Norwich City vs Hull City: Over 2.5 Goals and BTTS
Norwich City’s defensive frailties prevented them from challenging last season. This time around their generosity at the back sees them second bottom of the table with only crisis club Sheffield Wednesday below them. Norwich may have scored more goals (12) than the other sides in the bottom five, but 18 conceded tells its own story.
Hull City have plundered 20 goals in 12 matches, a total only bettered by free-scoring leaders Coventry. However, they have conceded the same number; a total only exceeded by rock-bottom Wednesday. The Tigers are currently in eighth place.
Furthermore, 75% of Hull’s matches have seen over 2.5 goals. 50% of Norwich’s have had three or more goals. We think that these stats point to goals at both ends, and we think that evens at bet365 is good value.
Birmingham City vs Portsmouth: Under 2.5 Goals
Both sides have averaged less than a goal per game this season, with Birmingham on 0.92 and Portsmouth on 0.83. Pompey, despite being down in 18th place, have the eighth-best defensive record in the Championship so far this season. 67% of Birmingham’s games and 67% of Portsmouth’s fixtures have failed to exceed 2.5 goals. We see this as a low-scoring encounter.
Southampton vs Preston: BTTS
Southampton, relegated from the Premier League last season, are closer to the bottom of the Championship than the top. They have conceded 17 goals in 12 games, scoring 13. The Saints have only kept two clean sheets all season, and both teams have scored in a division high of 83% of their matches.
Both teams have found the net in 50% of seventh-placed Preston’s games with the Lancashire club having scored 15 and conceded 12. They have only kept two clean sheets on the road in all competitions this season. This one looks like it will have goals at both ends.
Stoke City vs Bristol City: Under 2.5 Goals
We are some way off the Christmas season; however, it has to be said that Stoke City’s defence have been Scrooge like this season, with only eight goals conceded, the best rearguard record in the Championship. The Potters are sixth in the table, having scored 13, with only West Bromwich Albion having a lower total among teams currently in the top half of the division. 75% of their games has seen less than 2.5 goals.
Bristol City sit one place and one point above Stoke in fourth. In 12 matches, they have scored 20 and conceded 11. The spread of these goals has been fairly even, with 50% of the Robins’ games seeing less than three goals. Both teams have kept five clean sheets this season.
Given that this is a promotion six-pointer, we anticipate a tight game. Looking at the stats and the circumstances surrounding the match, we can’t see there being many goals.
