German Bundesliga 2021/2022 Season
Since its inaugural season in 1963-64, we have enjoyed 58 season-long campaigns of top-quality football. The Bundesliga has since worked its way into the Top 5 leagues in Europe and does not seem to be turning back any time soon!
The 2021/22 season is crucial to Bayern Munich, as the winners of 9 consecutive seasons will try to get that 10th title which would officially make them the team with the most consecutive titles in Europe’s best leagues. Borussia Dortmund, with their young star Erling Haaland, will be sure to do everything to stop the mighty reds in their tracks and regain the title after their last one way back in 2011/12.
Let’s have a look at who the bookies are backing:

Bundesliga 2021 Tips – Noteworthy Summer Transfers
Over the summer months, there have been some important moves worth noting, with talented, influential players such as Jadon Sancho (to Man Utd), David Alaba (to Real Madrid), Ibrahima Konate (to Liverpool), Leon Bailey (to Aston Villa) and Matheus Cunha (to Atletico Madrid) all moving out of Bundesliga.
To counteract the above, Bundesliga teams have also been on the lookout for reinforcements for their squads. Bayern Munich managed to lure young manager Julian Nagelsmann as well as Dayot Upamecano and captain Marcel Sabitzer from their direct competitors RB Leipzig. The sellers made sure to take advantage of the funds received and went on a spending spree, earning the services of Andre Silva and Angelino, among others.
Another player to follow will be Donyell Malen who will be wearing the electric yellow Borussia Dortmund shirt after signing from PSV Eindhoven. BVB will be hoping that their new signing will be able to fill in for Jadon Sancho.
Norwegian talent Jens Petter Hauge joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan from AC Milan, where he was mainly used as a substitute. We are eager to see what he will be able to bring to the German side if he is utilised as a regular first team player. With 3 goals and an assist in 5 Europe League appearances last season and some promising Serie A performances, he will be hoping for some consistent appearances on Frankfurt’s left wing.

Popular German Bundesliga Betting Markets
The Bundesliga is one of the most popular competitions in Europe, and the modern era of internet betting allows viewers and potential punters located all around the world greater access to view and bet on the league. Given the prestige internationally assigned to Germany’s top tier division, there is no shortage of interest in Bundesliga football betting opportunities. We've compiled all the top markets for this competition below.
Pre-match Bets on Bundesliga
The Bundesliga is home to various exciting matches being disputed between the country’s largest clubs. The odds on these are usually balanced, despite the clubs' respective position in the table at the time. Matches such as:
- Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund (Der Klassiker)
- Hertha Berlin vs Union Berlin (Berlin Derby)
- Cologne vs Borussia M’gladbach (Rhine Derby)
- RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich
Unfortunately, during the 2021/22 season we will not witness the Revierderby, which is known as the ‘mother of all derbies‘, between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 because the latter were relegated to Bundesliga II after ending the season in last place.
Here you will be able to bet on anything from the full time result, correct score, number of goals, number of cards and even corners. Most popular betting sites also offer the bet builder option which allows you to combine various markets together and create your own custom bet.
We highly suggest checking out the team stats of the teams playing before placing a bet. We have also put together a live profitability table for Bundesliga teams which we also suggest you check out – there is no such thing as too much information when it comes to studying trends.
Live Bets on Bundesliga
Live betting on Bundesliga matches has also gained popularity and offers punters the opportunity to place bets while the match is already underway, hence offering some markets which might not be available before the match. In general, all the pre-match markets will also be available for live betting but the odds will naturally change depending on how the match progresses.
Typical markets which are only available while the match is live would be markets such as next team to score, next player to score, next team to earn a corner and minute betting, which allows you to bet on match events such as a goal, corner or card to be scored/given within a particular timeframe – normally ranging 10 minutes.
First Team To Score
Similar to the first goalscorer bet, this bet is a gamble on which team will get the first goal in the match. Here punters would normally pay attention to teams starting matches at high tempo and who try to grab a goal as early as possible in a match. They would also keep a close eye on those teams who are more susceptible to conceding a goal in the early stages of a match.
For example, during the 2020/21 season, Union Berlin scored 22% of all their goals in the first 15 minutes of their matches, 75% of them in home matches. On the other hand, Hoffenheim conceded 19% of all the goals against them in the same first 15 minutes, 60% of them coming in away games. In fact, when Union Berlin played at home against Hoffenheim, they indeed managed to score within the first 15 minutes.
First or Anytime Goalscorer
A first goalscorer bet in the Bundesliga is the same as a first scorer bet in any other league. You'll need to correctly predict the player that will get the game’s first goal. You can, of course, back a No Goal Scorer bet too if you have a feeling that the game will end in a draw.
In the case of a bet on the anytime goalscorer, you will simply be looking for that particular player to score at any point during the match in order to secure the winnings.
Bundesliga Outright Bets
An outright winner’s bet is nothing more complicated than a bet made at the start of or during the season that aims to correctly predict who the winning team of the league will be. Bear in mind that, over the past two decades, Bayern Munich have been crowned champions of Germany an overwhelming number of times.
This season, the pressure is on to make it 10 in a row for Bayern Munich, but, as we all know, each season has a story to tell. The likes of RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg will be doing their best to give the Bavarians a worthy challenge.
Bundesliga Winner Without
Given the above trend, some betting sites also offer the opportunity for punters to bet on who they think will rank the highest, without a particular team in the standings – in this case Bayern Munich. So here, punters will try to guess who will rank highest from all the teams except Bayern Munich. This season, the favourites are Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
Although the odds favour Borussia Dortmund, we feel that RB Leipzig have now hopefully found a worthy replacement for Timo Werner in Andre Silva who, is expected to help them find more goals than they did last year and prove to be more worthy challengers for the top spot. Last season they scored a considerable 15 goals less than Borussia Dortmund (and 39 less than Bayern Munich) but were solid defensively.
Bundesliga Top Scorer
All leagues must have a top scorer; that is, the player that finishes with more goals scored than anyone else. Naturally, this aspect of the game creates a desire for a betting market among punters. Over recent seasons, this bet has been short-priced thanks to legendary performances from Robert Lewandowski.
The Bayern Munich prolific striker has cemented himself as one of the best strikers in the world at the moment, and has won the award for Bundesliga Top Scorer 6 times in the past 8 seasons. He also broke Gerd Muller’s long-standing record of 40 goals in one season by scoring 41 goals in the 2020/21 campaign. By winning another golden boot, the Polish international will equal the German legend’s total of 7 golden boot awards.
Leipzig’s new signing Andre Silva and Dortmund’s Haaland also had great performances last season and will be trying to possibly improve on them in order to challenge Lewandowski’s monopoly. Haaland also recently won the 2020/21 UEFA Forward of the Season following his outstanding tally of 10 goals in 8 appearances in the Champions League.
Another player worth keeping an eye on would be Patrik Schick, who currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen, especially after the great performance for his country during the EURO 2020 tournament, scoring the most goals in the tournament alongside none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Experienced punters might also be looking at the main men from some of the lower-ranked clubs and trying to figure out which player might get the larger percentage of club goals this season. However, given the fact that Bayern Munich have consistently scored over 85 goals a season for the past 5 season, it’s quite improbable this will be a winning tactic. Having said that, the research could prove useful for bets in other Bundesliga markets.
Below is a table of the current odds on the favourites for top goalscorer taken from bet365:
|Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)||1/5|
|Erling Braut Haaland (Borussia Dortmund)||3/1|
|Andre Silva (RB Leipzig)||16/1|
|Wouter Weghorst (Wolfsburg)||33/1|
|Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich)||66/1|
|Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen)||66/1|
|Andrej Kramaric (TSH Hoffenheim)||100/1|
|Alassane Plea (Borussia M’gladbach)||100/1|

Weekly Fixture Accumulator
Accumulators are bets with multiple selections, where each winning selection rolls on to the others to create a boosted total winning payout. This would be a perfect opportunity to put together a few ‘low-risk’ bets and multiply the odds to make the acca more profitable than betting on singles. For an accumulator to generate a return, all bets must be correct.
There isn’t really a minimum number of selections to an acca – even doubles count – and there isn’t a maximum either. In addition, there are also full cover and system bets, which come with lots of different bet combinations. To that end, when looking through the week's or weekend’s Bundesliga fixture list, it is definitely worth considering placing one or more accumulator bets.
To help you with this, we highly suggest checking out what KickForm has to say about the fixtures you are interested in.
Tournament Structure for the German Bundesliga
There are 18 teams competing in the German Bundesliga, coming from various regions of the country. Each team plays each other twice – once at home and once away. Three points are given to the winning team, one point is allocated for each team involved in a draw and losing teams are left with nothing. At the end of the season, the bottom two Bundesliga teams will be relegated while the team in 16th place will play a promotion/relegation playoff against the team finishing 3rd in the Bundesliga II.
The Bundesliga is currently ranked as one of the four top European leagues and has been given four Champions League places, along with Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A and England’s Premier League. As with the others, these four places are awarded for the top four finishers in the table. There is also an outright market available for bets on which team will finish within the top 4 and hence make it into the following season’s Champions League. Here are the odds for the favourites to finish in the Top 4 taken from William Hill, at the time of writing this Bundesliga review:
*All odds are subject to change.
Outside of the Top 4, the team placing 5th will proceed to the UEFA Europa League and the 6th-placed team will be given a spot in the UEFA Conference League qualification round.
History of the German Bundesliga
The first Bundesliga match was played in August 1963, and the league back then consisted of 16 teams. In 1965, the league expanded to 18 teams and began to be broadcast on live TV and has remained so since then. There was, however, a one-off season in 1991/92 when the league was contested between 20 teams.
Since the first season, Bayern Munich have won the title an impressive 30 times, leaving Borussia Dortmund and Borussia M’gladbach in second place with just 5 titles to their name. Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, Stuttgart, Cologne and FC Kaiserslautern have all won the title more than once.
