Tournament Structure for the German Bundesliga

There are 18 teams competing in the German Bundesliga, coming from various regions of the country. Each team plays each other twice – once at home and once away. Three points are given to the winning team, one point is allocated for each team involved in a draw, and losing teams are left with nothing. At the end of the season, the bottom two Bundesliga teams will be relegated, while the team in 16th place will play a promotion/relegation playoff against the team finishing 3rd in the Bundesliga II.

The Bundesliga is currently ranked as one of the four top European leagues and has been given four Champions League places, along with Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A and England’s Premier League. As with the others, these four places are awarded for the top four finishers in the table. There is also an outright market available for bets on which team will finish within the top 4 and hence make it into the following season’s Champions League.

German Bundesliga 2022/2023 Season

The German Bundesliga was first contested in the 1963/64 season, meaning there have been 59 campaigns since featuring top-quality football. It is now one of the top 5 domestic leagues in Europe, a status that doesn't seem like it will change any soon.

The 2022/23 season could see Bayern Munich win the title for the 11th successive. That extends their record for the most consecutive titles in the main leagues in Europe, which was ten.

Borussia Dortmund finished second in the 2021/2022 season. However, the departure of prolific striker Erling Haaland to Manchester City in the English Premier League will make it more difficult for Dortmund to win the Bundesliga title for the first time since the 2011/12 season.

Let’s now take a look at the bookies’ odds for the upcoming season:

Bundesliga 2022 Tips – Noteworthy Summer Transfers

The biggest transfer news of the summer was concerning a player leaving the Bundesliga rather than joining another club in the German top division. Erling Haaland moved from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City to enhance Pep Guardiola’s squad as he chases the ‘Holy Grail’ of European football, the Champions League. This move should help with your Bundesliga betting tips, but also should be considered when participating in Premier League betting.

The Champions League is the title Guardiola craves the most as the coach at City. Haaland could be the missing piece in the jigsaw, but with a release clause of £51.2 million in his contract with Dortmund, the Norwegian’s prolific finishing does not come cheap. However, it will be money well spent if City wins the Champions League final in Istanbul in June 2023.

Other Transfer News

In other significant Bundesliga transfer developments since the end of last season, Sadio Mane joined Bayern from Liverpool. In addition, Noussair Mazraoui arrived at the champions from Ajax of Amsterdam. Niklas Sule was the most significant departure from Munich, with a move to Dortmund. He was one of six new arrivals at that club, including Karim Adeyemi from Red Bull Salzburg, a key factor for Bundesliga betting tips.

There has been a huge turnover of players at RB Leipzig, currently third favourites for the Bundesliga outright winner (subject to change). Nine players have returned from loan spells elsewhere, plus three full transfers in, including Xaver Schlager from Wolfsburg. Bayer Leverkusen, next in the pre-season betting, has made one major signing in Adam Hlozek from Sparta Prague.

However, nothing compares in significance to Haaland’s move from Dortmund to Manchester!

Pre-Match Bets on Bundesliga

The fixtures between the biggest clubs in Germany provide many betting opportunities. The betting is often close, despite the relative positions in the Bundesliga and current form. Here are the best examples of huge meetings involving the major teams in German football:

  • Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund (Der Klassiker)
  • Hertha Berlin vs Union Berlin (Berlin Derby)
  • Cologne vs Borussia M’gladbach (Rhine Derby)
  • Borussia Dortmund v Schalke 04 (Revierderby)
  • RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich

Here you will be able to bet on anything from the Full Time Result, Correct Score, Number of Goals, Number of Cards and even betting on football corners. Most popular betting sites also offer the bet builder option, which allows you to combine various markets together and create your own custom bet. You can even place similar bets for the Italian Serie A.

We highly suggest checking out the team stats of the sides playing before placing a bet, along with our live profitability table for the Bundesliga. Remember – there is no such thing as too much information when it comes to studying trends!

  • Live Bets on Bundesliga

Live betting on Bundesliga matches has also gained popularity, offering punters the opportunity to place bets while the match is already underway. In general, both pre-match and live-specific markets will be available for live betting, but the odds will naturally change depending on how the match progresses.

Typical markets which are only available while the match is live would be those such as Next Team To Score, Next Player To Score, Next Team To Earn a Corner and minute betting, which allows you to bet on match events such as goals, corners or cards to be scored/given within a particular time frame – normally ranging 10 minutes.

  • First Team To Score

Similar to the First Goalscorer bet, this is a gamble on which team will get the first goal in the match. Here punters would normally pay attention to teams starting matches at high tempo and who try to grab a goal as early as possible in a match. They would also keep a close eye on those teams who are more susceptible to conceding a goal in the early stages of a match.

It is important to look at statistics for when teams scored their first goal in the latest Bundesliga season – for instance, Bayern scored 12 goals in the first 15 minutes of last season’s league schedule. They also scored 49 first-half goals and one less during the second period, and netted the first goal in 14 home fixtures and 12 matches on the road.

Augsburg conceded 12 goals in the opening 15 minutes and scored the first goal in 12 meetings. Eintracht Frankfurt opened the scoring in just 4 of 17 home matches last season, the lowest in the Bundesliga. It’s also worth noting that Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Cologne, and Borussia Monchengladbach were the only teams involved in matches with no first scorers.

  • First or Anytime Goalscorer

A First Goalscorer bet in the Bundesliga is the same as a First Scorer bet in any other league – you'll need to correctly predict the player that will get the game’s first goal. You can, of course, back a No Goal Scorer bet too if you have a feeling that the game will end in a draw.

In the case of a bet on the Anytime Goalscorer market, you will simply be looking for that particular player to score at any point during the match in order to secure winnings.

  • Bundesliga Outright Bets

Here is the latest news for the major Bundesliga outright markets:

  • Bundesliga Winner

An outright winner’s bet is made at the start of or during the season. Here, you'll need to correctly predict who the winning team of the league will be. (Bear in mind that, over the past two decades, Bayern Munich have been crowned champions of Germany an overwhelming number of times).

Sometimes, in betting, the obvious outcome and short odds should not be ignored. With Bayern Munich currently at odds of 2/9 to win their 11th consecutive title, it's about 3/1 for the rest of the field. You won't get rich backing the favourites, but a 22% return on investment may attract the big hitters. Munich is by some way the most likely champion, but the odds reflect their superiority and buying power.

  • Bundesliga Winner Without Bayern Munich

Given the above trend, some betting sites also offer the opportunity for punters to bet on who they think will rank the highest, without a particular team in the standings – in this case Bayern Munich. So here, punters will try to guess who will rank highest from all the teams except Bayern Munich, with the favourites for this season being Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. You can also place a similar bet when betting on La Liga.

The second favourites, Borussia Dortmund, embark on a new season without the goal-scoring contribution from Haaland, who scored 62 times in 67 appearances for the club. The striker will be almost impossible to replace, but RB Leipzig may come up short in running Munich the closest. Therefore, the value lies in backing Bayer Leverkusen without the favourite.

  • Bundesliga Top Scorer

All leagues must have a top scorer; that is, the player that finishes with more goals scored than anyone else. Naturally, this aspect of the game creates a desire for a betting market among punters. Over recent seasons, this bet has been short-priced thanks to legendary performances from Robert Lewandowski, always the favourite in Bundesliga Top Scorer odds at the best football betting sites.

The Polish striker is the obvious starting point in assessing the prospects for the leading marksman, heading the scoring charts at the end of the 2022/23 season. Lewandowski has been the Bundesliga’s top scorer in seven of the last nine seasons, scoring 540 goals in 745 domestic appearances. That said, a move to Barcelona during the transfer window will cause a shake-up in the top scorer betting.

If Lewandowski does leave Bayern Munich before the new season, Sadio Mane will get plenty of scoring opportunities for his new club. Andre Silva at RB Leipzig will attract some interest, but he scored just 11 goals in 33 appearances for the club last season. However, with the hot favourite potentially leaving the Bundesliga, Patrik Schick at Bayer Leverkusen offers some value in the Bundesliga top scorer odds.

Experienced punters might also be looking at the main men from some of the lower-ranked clubs and trying to figure out who might get the larger percentage of club goals this season. Given the fact that Bayern Munich have consistently scored over 85 goals a season for the past 6 season, though, it’s quite improbable this will be a winning tactic. In spite of this, the research could prove useful for bets in other Bundesliga markets.

You can apply these same guidelines for Top Scorer betting on Ligue 1.

  • Weekly Fixture Accumulator

Accumulators are bets containing multiple selections, where each winning selection rolls on to the others to create a boosted total winning payout. This would be a perfect opportunity to put together a few ‘low-risk’ bets and multiply the odds to make the acca more profitable than betting on singles. For an accumulator to generate a return, all bets must be correct.

There isn’t really a minimum number of selections to an acca – even doubles count – and there isn’t a maximum either. In addition, there are also full cover and system bets, which come with lots of different bet combinations. To that end, when looking through the week's or weekend’s Bundesliga fixture list, it is definitely worth considering placing one or more accumulator bets.

To help you with this, we highly suggest checking out the updated Bundesliga tips for every match at KickForm.

History of the German Bundesliga

The first Bundesliga match was played in August 1963, with the league back then consisting of 16 teams. In 1965, the league expanded to 18 teams and was broadcast on live TV, and has remained so since then. There was, however, a one-off season in 1991/92 when the league was contested between 20 teams.

Since the first season, Bayern Munich have won the title an impressive 31 times, leaving Borussia Dortmund and Borussia M’gladbach in second place with just 5 titles to their name. Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, Stuttgart, Cologne, and FC Kaiserslautern have all won the title more than once.
