David Hughes’ reign as Newport County manager is over. After signing a two-year deal in May, the former Manchester United academy boss has been relieved of his duties at Rodney Parade following a run of just three wins from 16 games to kick off their EFL League Two season.
The numbers haven’t been kind to Hughes or County in that time, and while they’ve been competitive with a string of one-goal defeats, a soft underbelly and lack of conviction up top have them marooned at the bottom of League Two.
Attention now shifts to the next Newport County manager odds and ultimately, Hughes’ replacement.

Mark Sampson – 2/1 Favourite
Mark Sampson has been listed as a surprising early favourite to become the next Newport County manager. Sampson is best known for his work with the England women’s side, where he revolutionised the structure of how women’s football was played and perceived on an international level.
Back-to-back semi-final appearances in the World Cup and European Championship propelled the Lionesses to second in the world rankings. However, he was sacked in September 2017 following an investigation into allegations of “inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour” during his time at Bristol Academy. Sampson was later cleared of any wrongdoing and was offered a “significant” settlement by the FA.
Since then, Sampson has had a brief caretaker role at Stevenage, where he worked as part of the coaching staff until 2021. He’s been out of work since 2021 and has not been linked to many high-profile jobs since, which makes it even more surprising to see his name at the top of this list.
It all depends on whether the board are willing to risk what could be a PR disaster. Football-wise, he ticks a lot of boxes. Welsh, experienced in player development, comfortable working under financial constraints. But he’s too short at 2/1 for what we’d assume are more early whispers than anything concrete. One to avoid, for now.
Steve Evans – 6/1 Value Pick
A much less controversial move would be for former Rotherham boss Steve Evans. He’s a promotion specialist who is best known for taking The Millers from League Two to the Championship and then Stevenage away from the relegation zone and into League One.
There are a lot of similarities between the Newport County job and the work he’s done at both Rotherham and Stevenage. The only niggle would be the style of football, with fans from most of his previous clubs stating that his direct approach can be tedious at times.
But this is a results business. Newport need results, and fast. Steve Evans, on paper, looks a perfect fit and at 6/1 is our value pick to take charge at Rodney Parade.
