Darren Ferguson has been sacked as manager of Peterborough United for the fourth time in 16 years. Attention has already shifted to who will replace the 53-year-old as the next Peterborough United manager odds go live. Former Notts County manager Luke Williams is one of a host of potential candidates, along with Leam Richardson, Kieran Scarff and Steve Evans, touted to be in the running.
The decision to remove Ferguson has, admittedly, been brewing. Club owner Darragh MacAnthony called him ‘the greatest manager in the club’s history’, and that’s not lip service. Ferguson has sealed promotion with the Posh on three occasions and won the EFL Trophy (formerly the Football League Trophy) three times across his four tenures.
But football is a now business, and right now it isn't good at Weston Homes Stadium. Peterborough are bottom of League One, with just three wins in 13 games, and Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Blackpool proved to be the final nail in the coffin as Ferguson’s departure was announced shortly after the full-time whistle.

Luke Williams
Former Notts County and Swansea City manager Luke Williams is the most obvious to come on board as Ferguson’s replacement. His career has so far been defined by taking Notts County from the National League into League Two, amassing 100+ points and 100+ goals in the process.
His success at Meadow Lane earned him a move to Championship outfit Swansea City, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract in January 2024. He managed to keep the Swans up, but was sacked just 13 months into his contract after a run of seven defeats in nine games.
Williams’ mantra is all about player development, and he would buy into the “new era” that the board and fans are craving at Peterborough. As a free agent, compensation would be avoided, and he would be a sound long-term investment.
Leam Richardson
Leam Richardson has been out of work since leaving Rotherham in 2024. His League One resume is impressive, winning the league with Wigan in 2021/22 and holding a club that was constantly flirting with financial chaos together, while still getting results. Something that a role at Peterborough would mirror.
His time at Rotherham was ugly. Two wins in 24 games led to an inevitable sacking, but context is needed, as he walked into a sinking ship that never truly had a shot of staying afloat in the Championship.
He knows how to win in League One, and while the board will be keen to look toward the future, they need someone to hit the ground running and get them out of their current mess. Richardson could do that and would be a solid choice to take charge.
Kieran Scarff
Darren Ferguson’s assistant, Kieran Scarff, is an interesting option. He’s worked his way through the ranks at Peterborough and is highly thought of, initially running the Posh academy and development pathway before joining Ferguson’s first-team staff.
It’s not yet known if Scarff and Ferguson’s other assistant, Kevin Russell, will remain on at the club, but MacAnthony might opt for an evolution over a revolution. If this is the case, Scarff would be a good fit. His lack of experience managing at the first-team level will be a concern, and giving him the keys will be a huge leap of faith, but if the board have seen enough from Scarff over the last couple of years, it’s an appointment that has some merit.
