French Ligue 1 2020/2021 Odds & Tips

Monaco v PSG

Patrick Gillen (@PatrickGillen94) previews Monaco v PSG and provides us with his best bets for Friday night’s Ligue 1 clash by analysing team news, potential line-ups, head-to-head, key stats, facts and more.

Monaco v PSG Betting Preview, Odds & Tips

  • Date: 20/11/20
  • Time: 20:00
  • Venue: Stade Louis II
  • Channel: BT Sport 3

Paris Saint-Germain will look to solidify their position at the top of Ligue 1 on Friday night when they travel to the Stade Louis II to face Nico Kovac’s sixth placed Monaco.

The French champions, despite a stuttering start to the season, are in scintillating form, winning their last five games by three goals or more, including a 3-0 win at home to Rennes in their last outing.

This run of form before the international break leaves Thomas Tuchel’s side five points clear of second placed Lille and seven clear of Friday’s opponents.

Monaco have improved themselves of late, hitting four past Bordeaux and then edging past Nice to put an end to a miserable run of three games without a victory.

It’s a crucial game for Les MonΓ©gasques on Friday night, as a shock win would lift them into second place, at least temporarily, and close the gap on the potential runaway leaders PSG to just four points.

Team News

The home side will be without right-back Ruben Aguilar through suspension, meaning Djibril Sidibe should return to the starting XI.

Benjamin Lecomte (hand) and Alexsandr Golovin (hamstring) are injured, while important striker Hassim Ben Yedder will miss out having tested positive for coronavirus.

Paris Saint-Germain have worries themselves over the fitness of key players – former Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe is expected to be fit as is Neymar, but Marco Verratti will likely miss out.

The international break also leaves doubts over the fitness of Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes and Marquinhos, who all returned from South America on Wednesday.

Mauro Icardi, Moise Kean, Idrissa Gueye, Julian Draxler and Pablo Sarabia are all also absent for this fixture through injury.

Potential Monaco Starting XI: Mannone, Sidibe, Disasi, Badiashile, Henrique, Tchouameni, Fofana, Diop, Martins, Volland, Jovetic

Potential PSG Starting XI: Navas, Dagba, Kimpembe, Diallo, Bakker, Herrera, Pereira, Rafinha, Florenzi, Neymar, Mbappe

Key Stats & Facts

  • Monaco are unbeaten in their last eight home league games
  • Paris Saint-Germain are unbeaten in their last seven league games to Monaco (W5, D2)
  • Monaco have lost four out of their last five home games against PSG, conceding an average of 2.8 goals per game in the process

The Verdict

Monaco have seen over 2.5 goals in four of their last five home games, and with free scoring Paris Saint-Germain coming to town, I think a high scoring game could once again be on the agenda.

In fact, the last six meetings in all competitions between these two teams has seen over 3.5 goals, which you can back at 10/11 with bet365.

PSG have been rolling over teams of late in Ligue 1, winning six out of their last seven games by at least three goals. The away side are available at 11/8 with Paddy Power to win with a handicap of -1.

Influential PSG striker Kylian Mbappe has once again been in the mood this season, scoring seven goals in ten games so far in the league.

The former Monaco star is 10/3 with Boylesports to be the first goal scorer, and I recommend putting this on as an each way bet.

Popular Ligue 1 Betting Markets

With a top league like the Ligue 1, there is no shortage of betting opportunities be it a match or season-long wager, especially if you bet with one of the best football betting sites that we have recommended on our site. We have selected some exciting betting markets along with a few useful Ligue 1 betting tips.

To Win Outright Without PSG

An outright bet is placed on the team that you think will be crowned Ligue 1 champions the following May. You can place an outright winner bet at any time of the season, but it usually works best at the beginning of the season when the odds are higher. Each of the 20 teams participating in the Ligue 1 have a chance of becoming champions of the league if they win more matches and secure the most points than any other team in the season. It’s worth knowing, however, that Paris Saint-Germain has won 7 out of the last 8 Ligue 1 titles available, which makes this particular market much more appealing.

Top Goal Scorer

One type of bet that could be of interest to you is the top goalscorer bet. If there is a player that you think will top the goal-scoring charts by the end of the season, then this is the best bet for you. If your selected player ends up scoring the most goals, your bet is a winner.

To Be Relegated

No team in the Ligue 1 wants to be relegated to Ligue 2, but there will always be teams which, according to their preparations, can give you a clue on their chances of surviving in the league. The odds for this kind of bet are lucrative when placed before the season starts or early in the season, though this kind of bet can be placed at any time.

To Finish Top 3 Odds

The top 3 teams on the Ligue 1 standings at the end of each season earn the chance of participating in the lucrative UEFA Champions league as it is with the top 4 in the Premier League. Therefore, the race for a top 3 spot in the Ligue 1 is a fierce battle,Β so bookmakers often leave room for bettors to wager on the top 3 teams before the season ends. Whilst the odds won’t be as high as the outright betting markets, this still presents a good chance of getting a nice payout.

Tournament Structure for the French Ligue 1

The Ligue 1 is played from mid-August each year until late May. The league consists of 20 teams who play each other twice, on a home and away basis, thereby playing 38 matches over the course of a season. Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. All accrued points are entered into a league table format and at the end of the season, the team with most points are crowned the champions.

The two teams at the bottom of the table with least points are automatically relegated to the Ligue 2, the second tier of French football. The 18th-placed Ligue 1 team and the 3rd-placed Ligue 2 team will have to play a two-legged playoff game, and the winner of the play-offs game takes part in the Ligue 1 the following season.

Ligue 1 games are mostly played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a limited amount of games being played on weekday evenings. At the end of each Ligue 1 season, the top three highest-ranked teams on the league table get the opportunity to participate in the UEFA Champions League. There are two transfer windows in the Ligue: the summer and winter ones, where teams are allowed to transfer players to other clubs both locally and internationally.

The Coupe De France is the main domestic cup competition in France and accompanies the Ligue 1.

History of the French Ligue 1

The French Ligue 1, sometimes called Le Championnat, was inaugurated in September 1932 under the name National before the name of the league changed to Division 1 just after the first season. The Division 1 was rebranded in 2002 to its current name. Ligue 1 started with 20 teams in 1932 and continues with the same number to this day, including Marseille, Rennes, Montpellier, Nice, Metz and Nimes, who were part of the founding clubs and are still participating the current Ligue 1 season.

A total of 73 clubs have participated in the Ligue 1 since its foundation to this current season. Paris Saint-Germain is the only club not to have suffered points relegation as they were administratively relegated in 1972, but returned to the Ligue 1 in 1974 and have not gone down again till now.

ThePuntersPage Final Say:

The Ligue 1 might not be as big as the Premier League when it comes to the brand and money involved, but it is still one of the major leagues in the world of football. The Ligue 1 has become very exciting over the past few seasons as the top clubs in the league have signed and brought in some of the most famous and talented football stars.

With 20 teams, the Ligue 1 is promising and highly unpredictable in other ranks, despite the fact that Paris Saint-Germain tends to dominate. It is also well-organised with huge TV right deals, making it an even more lucrative competition on which to bet.
