Ligue 1 Betting – 2023/24 Predictions
Despite the rise of competitors, PSG are still the overwhelming favourite to win yet another Ligue 1 title. William Hill are currently offering the most generous odds at 1/5. However, this is a bet that has little value, especially considering that it genuinely looks like there might be a title race in France this season.
So, who could usurp PSG to the title? With Marseille rebuilding under Gennaro Gattuso and Lyon a potential candidate for the drop, those two huge French clubs won’t be in the picture. Instead, Monaco and Nice could emerge as unlikely contenders.
Both clubs are led by new managers, with Adi Hutter leading Monaco and highly rated Italian boss Francesco Farioli in charge of Nice. The latter have already beaten PSG in Paris this season, and while Farioli’s ideals are conducive to sustained success, it’s hard to envisage them going all the way. A top-four bet is definitely worth a punt, though.
TIP:
For me, Monaco are the most likely side to usurp PSG. Hutter has done an excellent job of translating his principles onto his players, and his squad is well-suited to achieving what Hutter sets out to accomplish every game. Monaco are a brilliant watch; dynamic, aggressive, and vertical, they play like an elite Bundesliga side. They’ve got strength in depth at key positions, especially up top, and are currently priced at 10/1 to win Ligue 1.
TIP:
Lens were the surprise package in Ligue 1 last season as they finished second, and although they endured a wretched start to the current campaign, they’ve got the minerals to still enjoy a fine season. Excellently coached by Franck Haise, Lens are currently a very good price to make the top four at 5/1 with bet365. That’s a bet I’m taking on.
Popular Ligue 1 Betting Markets
Betting on Ligue 1 offers abundant opportunities, especially through the top football betting sites we have recommended above. Below are some exciting betting markets we've selected, along with a few useful Ligue 1 betting tips.
To Win Outright Without PSG
PSG’s monopoly over Ligue 1 has meant the vast majority of bookies offer punters the chance to bet on the league winner without Les Parisiens. Therefore, if PSG finish top of the table and the team you back in this sort of bet finishes second, you’ll win. You can also back an outright victor, although PSG’s incredibly short odds mean there’s little value.
Top Goal Scorer
An exciting Ligue 1 season-long bet is a Top Goalscorer wager. If you’re keen on a particular player or are certain a new arrival will hit the ground running, you can back them to top the Ligue 1 scoring charts. If your selected player ends the season with the most goals in the competition, then your bet is a winner! Recent victors include Kylian Mbappé, Edinson Cavani, and Zlatan Ibrahimović.
To Be Relegated
A change to Ligue 1’s structure saw the number of teams come down to 18 from 20, starting from the 2023/24 season. As a result, just the bottom two teams will be automatically relegated to Ligue 2.
The team that finishes 16th will play in a relegation play-off against the side that wins the Ligue 2 promotion play-offs. The winner of that tie will either remain in Ligue 1 or earn promotion to the top tier. Thus, when making this sort of bet, you’ll want to back a side that you reckon is going to finish in the bottom two.
To Finish Top 4 Odds
The top four in Ligue 1 each garner a lucrative slot in the following season’s Champions League, with fifth spot earning a place in the Europa League and sixth the Europa Conference League. Thus, while those in the Premier League are used to hearing the phrase “top four race”, it’s very much a battle for the top three in France.
Bookmakers offer the chance to bet on those who you think will finish in one of these coveted positions, and although the odds aren’t as high compared to the outright markets, generous payouts can still manifest. In 2023/24, several dark horses might fancy their chances of sneaking into the top four, including Brest and Reims.
ThePuntersPage Final Say
There’s more to Ligue 1 than PSG, especially after the departures of Lionel Messi and Neymar. While the league’s dominant force are favourites to retain their crown in 2023/24, there’s scope for the division to be mightily competitive at the top. As a result, it’s bound to be a season of thrills and spills in France, so you’d be wise to take advantage of the coverage provided by premier bookmakers of the division.
Ligue 1 Betting FAQs
Based on our assessment, Unibet, bwin, Bet UK, bet365, and William Hill are the best bookmakers for Ligue 1 betting.
There are now just 18 teams competing in Ligue 1. There had been 20 between 1932 and 2023.
A total of six European places are awarded, with the top three earning a spot in the following season’s Champions League. Fourth spot also enter the Champions League, but they must progress from the third qualifying round. Fifth spot earns a Europa League place, while sixth qualifies for the Europa Conference League.
The bottom two will go straight down to Ligue 2, while 16th place will compete in a relegation play-off against a leading side from Ligue 2.
Given its status as a leading European league, Ligue 1 is certainly a popular betting option for punters.
