Most Likely: Sunderland To Be Relegated (2/5)
Fair enough, Sunderland edged past Sheffield in the play-offs and splashed out £122 million in the transfer window, including snapping up Spanish teenage talent Marc Guiu, who bagged six in sixteen for Chelsea last season. It’s an ambitious roll of the dice. But will it work? Probably not.
Frankly, Sunderland looks lucky to be here. They were 14 points behind Sheffield United and lost all five of their final Championship games. Sure, they pulled it off in the end but going from that to thriving in the Premier League even with a massive spending spree is a very tall order.
We admire their moxie but reckon their Premier League efforts will be poxy and that’s why we think they’re a value bet for relegation even at short 2/5 odds.
Best Value: Wolves To Be Relegated (3/1)
Wolves finished up last season in a miserable sixteenth place and looked utterly toothless through most of the campaign. Worst of all, they stumbled badly towards the end, failing to win a single game since their clash with a free-falling Leicester City back in April. That slump rolled right into the club friendlies, where they failed to beat Stoke, Girona or Lens.
In a nutshell, they come into this season after several months of looking simply incapable of beating sides at a top level.
But what of the transfer season, their light at the end of this winless tunnel of gloom? Well, it has not been that fruitful. Just three new signings so far and with Amine Adli still far from putting pen to paper, there is not much meat on the bones for these hungry Wolves to regain their former strength. Unless something changes very soon, they are in extremely dangerous territory and could easily find themselves wandering into the wilderness of relegation.
With all that in mind, we would say 4/1 is an absolute bargain and even the best bookies in the UK have totally missed the mark on this one. Oh well, more value for us.
Best Long Shot: Tottenham Hotspur To Be Relegated (100/1)
Look, no one expects it to happen until it does. Empires fall, and any team can be relegated if they perform badly enough. Right now, we think Spurs are teetering on the edge of that abyss.
They actually performed worse than Wolves, finishing in 17th last season, and if it weren’t for how hopeless the bottom three were, they could’ve been in serious trouble. Those teams are gone now, replaced by clubs desperate to prove they belong in the top flight.
Now, picture this. Tottenham fail to adequately replace Son, who’s left for Major League Soccer. Sure, they’ve splashed out £55 million on Mohammed Kudus, but there’s no guarantee that delivers the creativity they need.
Add in the pressure on Thomas Frank. New regimes often misfire early on, just look at Rúben Amorim’s rocky start at Manchester United. Then, say one promoted team punches above their weight. Perhaps Leeds lands a cosy mid-table spot like it’s 2002 again.
All that together, and yes, Spurs going down becomes a real possibility. Do we think it’s very likely? No. But 100/1 odds? That’s a belter of a value bet.
