It’s all change in the Championship promotion race for the 2026/27 season. We’ve gone from a traditional top two automatic spots and four play-off spots to an extended eight-team birth, with third and fourth progressing to the semis and fifth to eighth playing a one-leg quarter-final. It’s altered the dynamic of the betting market somewhat, so my strategy this season has reflected that. Here are my Championship Top 8 predictions for 2026/27.
Just before I jump into my picks, I want to add a quick caveat. Not included are West Ham, Wolves, Middlesbrough and Burnley. For me, these four are locks, and each is exceptionally short priced to be in the top 8 come May, with little to no value. Chris posted his Championship outright winner tips earlier in the week, and I agree with pretty much all of it. So, my picks for the top 8 don’t include them, but I do think they will feature. Let’s get started, shall we?

Bet 1: Norwich City
When Philippe Clement arrived at Carrow Road last November, the club were in turmoil. Marooned second bottom of the league with nine points from 15 games, they needed their owners, Norfolk Holdings, to jump into action and somehow shake their unwanted tag of Norfolk-in-chance. They did just that by sacking Liam Manning and replacing him with the highly regarded Belgian, which not only saved the club from almost certain relegation, but completely transformed their outlook for 2026/27.
A run of 17 wins in their next 31 propelled them to a respectable ninth, with a points per game of 1.8 – enough to have secured them fourth if this form had been from the start of the season.
The board have put their money where their mouth is this summer. Andre Brooks was signed from Sheffield United for a reported £8 million. Bruno Alves comes in on a season-long loan from Cruzeiro. And Sam Field makes his loan move from QPR permanent. But, most importantly, they retained the services of Mohammed Toure, who was signed in January from Rangers and bagged nine goals in 11 Championship games. A huge weapon for the club moving forward.
The markets look favourable for this pick as well. Odds of 10/11 with some of the best betting sites is a great price, and I wouldn’t be that surprised if the Canaries ruffled a few feathers this season, such is the quality of their squad.
Bet 2: Wrexham
A Premier League promotion push is the Hollywood storyline that Wrexham fans could only have dreamed of when Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took charge of the club back in 2021. But here we are.
They have their haters, but such is the world we live in; even Gandhi would if he were active on the socials.
For most fans of the sport, me included, it’s been great to see them surge through the leagues. It feels like they have gone about things the right way as well, and they come into this season with all the tools to get into those promotion spots.
They reportedly spent north of £40 million in 2025/26, and it almost paid off, finishing two points outside of the playoffs. Phil Parkinson has been bullish over the last couple of weeks about his squad, citing that they are already better, stronger than they were last preseason.
Plugging gaps has been the blueprint this summer. Ben Whiteman comes in from Preston, offering much-needed competition in the middle of the park. Danny Imray brings Premier League experience from Crystal Palace at wing-back, and a deal for Anthony Patterson, who is top, top ‘keeper from Sunderland, looks to be as good done as well.
Very little first team quality has been lost. Problematic areas have been filled. Foundations that were already in place have been built on. Odds of 6/5 for Wrexham to make the Championship playoffs – yes, please and thank you very much.
Bet 3: Swansea City
It could be an ominous sign that I’ve seen very few people discuss the possibility of a resurgent Swansea City. They’re a club that have been underperforming for far too long now, and I think that puts a lot of punters off about a potential return to their former glory days. But hear me out for a second.
Their revival has been, in many ways, very similar to that of Norwich’s. In November last year, they were 20th, four points above the relegation zone and dropping faster than the Welsh Rugby Union side.
Cue the arrival of Vitor Matos.
The Portuguese import not only steadied the ship, but also averaged 1.57 points per game to drag Swansea to a respectable 11th.
They’ve made some shrewd summer signings as well. Elijah Just comes in on a three-year-deal from Motherwell. Exciting 21-year-old forward Joseph Opoku bolsters an already impressive forward line. But, arguably most importantly, they managed to keep hold of Zan Vipotnik.
The Slovenian scored 23 league goals last season and won the 2025/26 Championship Golden Boot as a result. He will be key this year if they are to mount a playoff charge.
Combine all that with the fact we can get 5/2 on a top eight finish, and I think that makes a lot of sense here, especially if linked with an exclusive Championship betting offer. If you’re looking for a team from outside of the usual suspects, Swansea are as good a shout as any.
