The Kickform stats show that both teams have scored in the four Premier League games involving the two teams. The Tractor Boys beat Sunderland 2-1 on opening day before losing 5-2 at Old Trafford. Liverpool rescued a point with an injury time penalty to draw 2-2 at Newcastle United and came from behind twice to share the points with Nottingham Forest at Anfield. For good measure Ipswich beat Leicester City 3-1 in the Carabao Cup. Delving into the stats from last season, both teams scored in 68% of Liverpool’s matches, the second highest total in the Premier League. 57% of Ipswich’s Championship fixtures saw both teams hit the net.
Ipswich’s opening games have shown that they are prepared to have a go, but they look vulnerable to conceding against quality Premier League sides. Liverpool look uncertain at the back but have a wealth of attacking talent to call upon and have proved they can score when not at their fluent best. BTTS is a great place to start the bet builder.
Over 2.5 Goals
The reasoning for this bet is similar. Both teams look capable of scoring and conceding. All five of the competitive matches involving Ipswich and Liverpool this season have seen at least three goals. Last season 52% of Ipswich’s matches and 61% of Liverpool’s games saw three or more goals. I fully expect this trend to continue.
Alexander Isak to Score
Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool proved a disaster for all parties last season. However, the Swede looked a bit better during the World Cup and looked quite sharp in pre-season. He looked ineffective on his return to St James’ Park but, although he didn’t have a great game, he managed three shots against Nottingham Forest and, crucially, found the net with one. Form is temporary and class is permanent so expect Isak to hit the goal trail sooner rather than later, providing Liverpool find a way to play to his strengths. The former Real Sociedad man also has a great record against Ipswich, scoring a hat-trick for Newcastle at Portman Road and notching from the penalty spot in the return fixture in the 2024/25 season. 20/23 at Betfred is a decent price for Isak to get on the scoresheet.
Sasa Lukic 2+ Fouls
Sasa Lukic is a seasoned Premier League player who could prove to be an excellent signing for Ipswich. I have tipped Gary O’Neil’s side to go down however they have started well and look as though they could make a real fight of staying up. If they are to do so, Lukic’s experience will be crucial. He is an extremely competitive player and as a result he racks up his fair share of fouls. Lukic has committed four fouls in the Portman Road outfit’s first two matches, including three in the defeat at Old Trafford. Last season in the Premier League for his previous club Fulham, he averaged 2.75 fouls per 90 minutes. Given that Liverpool’s central midfielders all have good records for winning fouls I am confident that the Serb will be whistled up at least twice on Friday night.
Kjell Scherpen 3+ Saves
Kjell Scherpen has been a busy man in Ipswich’s opening games. He made two saves in the win over Sunderland and six saves in the loss at Old Trafford. Liverpool have forced the opposition goalkeeper into seven saves across their opening two matches. I am backing Scherpen to make at least three stops in this one.
