Last weekend’s barney at the Red Bull Ring was captivating stuff. Modern-day F1 racing at its best. Even though it was just one race, I think it taught us a lot heading into, for me, the best weekend of the racing calendar for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Current F1 Sit-Rep
Let’s recap where we are. First, the Mercedes might have had a little wobble in recent weeks, but they are still very much the cars to beat. Red Bull has by far the fastest powertrain, but just can’t quite hook it altogether. Ferrari still makes basic strategic errors. And for McLaren, well, roll on 2027.
The melting pot has created one of the most competitive fields for some time, and whether you’re in or out for the current hybrid setup, the racing, for me at least, has been fascinating.
This is all important when it comes to F1 British Grand Prix betting markets, as there are now six to eight cars that can win rather than one or two and then ‘the rest’. Anyway, enough of my waffle, let’s jump into my betting tips for Silverstone this weekend.
Bet 1: Kimi Antonelli to Win
It would have been very interesting last week if Kimi Antonelli’s qualifying lap had not been hampered by a double yellow on his final hot lap. The Italian was shifting, and while he might not have beaten George Russell, you can’t help but feel that he would have been front row, which changes his entire race.
He made a good crack at it, to be fair to him, even if he did have to take some creative lines early doors. But one thing is for certain: right now, his race pace is faster than George's, and that will be alarming if you’re a Russell fan.
For me, he’s still the man to beat this weekend. He heads off as a significant 13/8 favourite with the best F1 betting sites, and even if he can position himself in the first two rows, Silverstone is a track that will suit him, giving him plenty of opportunities to overtake and use that race pace to his advantage, if needed.
Bet 2: George Russell Fastest Qualifier (Pole Position)
Ferrari and Red Bull may have picked up ground on the Silver Arrow, but Mercedes is still the team to beat this weekend.
Russell has shown that he is very quick at qualifying. Some will argue that he was lucky last week not to have been more impeded by Verstappen going off and not to have had to lift or even abort his lap, as Antonelli did.
But for Toto Wolff to come out and say he was a massive five-tenths up when the double yellows were waived, then lift and still finish over two-tenths up on Charles Leclerc, was incredible.
A home Grand Prix for George will only add more fuel to his fire as he sets out to catch his teammate in the Driver’s Championship. He won't want the embarrassment of being outdone by a driver who is, essentially, still a rookie.
My worry for George is that he’s not as quick as Kimi over 60+ laps. He can hook a qualifying lap together no problem, but going back to that race pace again, and I don’t think he has it.
That said, qualifying is a different beast. He will be full of confidence going into this weekend and odds of 2/1 for him to be on pole on Saturday is my second British Grand Prix betting tip.
Bet 3: Max Verstappen Podium Finish
If Verstappen hadn’t thrown his car into a wall in qualifying, he would have been a real problem for Mercedes last weekend. I think it’s safe to say that Red Bull has the best powertrain on the grid right now, and they are starting to become a lot more competitive.
It wasn’t a complete shock to see Max take second in the Austrian Grand Prix. It’s a track he’s won at four times – more than any other driver – and with their upgrades, the car looks a lot more stable, especially at low speeds.
Given that Silverstone is a much longer track than the Red Bull Ring with more high-speed sections, this should play into Red Bull’s hands.
He’s currently priced at 4/5 to make the podium, and while Ferrari will be in the mix, I think Max will be next best this week behind the Mercedes. Verstappen to finish in the top three is my final pick for the weekend.
