Introduction

In operation since 1934, William Hill is one of the oldest bookmakers still functioning. In this review, we’ll examine whether their reputation as one of the industry’s best is well-earned, and gauge how the old dog stacks up against modern competitors.

How I Rated William Hill

Despite the bookmaker’s prestige, I have not bet often with William Hill. Thus, I was keen to test out their sportsbook and, as a keen football punter, check out their football offering, too. While a bookie’s sportsbook is key in my assessment, I had to consider the fundamentals of what makes a sound bookmaker, too, before arriving at an overall rating and conclusion.

Security 5/5

  • UKGC and Government of Gibraltar licences
  • Site uses secure 128-bit SSL encryption technology
  • Various betting limits available

William Hill is an industry behemoth, so you should have no security concerns. The bookmaker is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission as well as the Government of Gibraltar, while the site itself has implemented 128-bit SSL technology to encrypt data going to and from the platform, including personal information.

There haven’t been any notable data breaches in the past. William Hill’s emphasis upon security and player welfare is evident from the very start of your journey with the bookie. During the registration process, you’re asked to set either a daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limit. You must choose one of the options to keep your gambling in check.

This focus on responsible gambling permeates through once you’ve created an account. William Hill’s ‘Safer Gambling Hub’ runs you through a variety of gambling concerns, including the protection of minors. To ensure your gambling doesn’t spiral out of control, you can set several account limits. In addition to Deposit Limits, you can also set Stake Limits, and a Reality Check. Time-Outs, Self-Exclusions, and even a full Account Closure are also options.

Registration Process 4/5

  • Processed all on one page
  • Basic information required
  • Automatic verification

William Hill’s registration process is split into two stages. Once my logging in issue (which I’ll discuss later) was resolved, it didn’t take me long at all for me to create an account with this bookie. Here’s how I did it:

William Hill Registration Screenshot

1. I accessed William Hill’s website and clicked ‘Join’ located fairly distinctly in the top right-hand corner of the homepage.

2. That immediately brought up the above screen – the first stage of registration. They asked for my name, date of birth, mobile, and address.

3. I then clicked ‘Continue’.

William Hill Registration Screenshot

4. Next, I had to create a username and password, and provide and answer for a security question.

5. After confirming my deposit limits, I selected my contact preferences.

6. If you want to take advantage of William Hill’s new customer offers, this is where you add the promo codes.

7. To conclude the process, I clicked ‘Agree and Join’. Just like that, my William Hill journey was underway!

Welcome Offer 4/5

  • Bet £10 & Get £30 in Free Bets
  • Qualifying odds bet must be at least 1/2
  • VIP programme available

William Hill bet £10 Get £30 Welcome Offer Screenshot

William Hill’s new customer offer isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it’s laden with value. You can earn £30 in Free Bets off the back of your first £10 deposit and stake.

To ensure you qualify for this promotion, all you’ve got to do is place a bet on any sports market offered by William Hill that boasts odds of at least 1/2. Oh, and if you’re signing up via their mobile app, please ensure you enter the code ‘R30’ before completing the process.

Your Free Bets will be credited as three £10 bets immediately after your first qualifying bet has settled.

Considering you can earn a 300% bonus and the ease at which your bonus can be unlocked, there’s little to complain about here. The fact you get three Free Bets means you can spread them around and make the most of various markets and events.

Welcome Offer Key Terms and Conditions

Deposits

There is an endless list of available payment methods. You can deposit with William Hill via debit card (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro), Apple Pay, William Hill Cash Direct, PayPal, Skrill, NETELLER, paysafecard, ecoPayz, and Fast Bank Transfer.

The limits for each method are relatively low. For all the methods mentioned, the minimum deposit is £10 – except from debit cards and Apple Pay, where it is £5.

The maximum deposits vary for each of the methods. The max is very high for the most popular option (debit cards) at £99,000. PayPal’s maximum is quite low at £5,500, but such concerns will only affect a small minority of users.

William Hill also offers another option: Cash Direct. This method allows you to deposit funds into your online betting account by picking up vouchers from their high street stores.

There are no fees involved with any of the offered methods, with all deposits being processed instantly.

Withdrawals

There are fewer withdrawal methods available, but there’s still a sufficient supply. For the pair of debit cards, the minimum withdrawal amount is £5, while the maximum isn’t disclosed.

The minimum withdrawal amount is a £5 for NETELLER, Skrill, and Payz but their maximums differ. It’s £25,000 with NETELLER, £80,000 with Skrill, and a whopping £300,000 with ecoPayz.

You can also withdraw funds using PayPal. With this method, the minimum withdrawal is £10 and maximum is £5,500.

Withdrawals are typically processed within 24 hours, although they can take up to 72 hours if you’re using a debit card. Bank transfers can take anywhere between 3-5 working days.

Sportsbook Promotions 3/5

  • Promotions lack variety*
  • #YourOdds boosted
  • VIP programme only includes casino

William Hill Sportsbook Promotions Screenshot

I was somewhat surprised by the lack of current variety in William Hill’s sportsbook promotions. For such a popular bookmaker, their offering was sub-standard.

Football is the primary focus, although there are horse racing promotions, too. However, these are limited to boosted odds (x1 per day) and Top Price Guaranteed. These are promos offered by almost every bookmaker.

There’s more to enjoy if you’re a football bettor. For example, William Hill’s #YourOdds EPIC Boosts guarantees boosted odds on any #YourOdds bet with more than three selections of odds of 3/1 or greater.

There are also daily sports giveaways, and they’re also big on predictions. You can win up to £100 in Free Bets every week should top their predictions table.

Overall, though, I was very disappointed by their promotions. They’ve got to start including more sports and offer some originality.

*Please note that the offers mentioned here are correct at the time of reviewing bet365 and are subject to change.

William Hill VIP Programme

William Hill does offer a VIP programme, but it’s very much casino-based. You can earn WHPoints (WHPs) and Club Points (CPs) for playing William Hill Poker. Points are accumulated by merely playing with WHPs determining your Club Status and are used to cash any bonus money balance you might have

Your Club Status determines the rate at which you accumulate CPs, which can be used to buy-in to exclusive Points Tournaments. You begin at ClubStatus1 and work your way up to ClubStatus7.

Pre-Match Betting 5/5

  • 37 sports make up sportsbook
  • #YourOdds markets available
  • Consistent odds
  • Stellar football coverage

William Hill Pre-Match Offer Screenshot

Sports

William Hill’s sportsbook is currently comprised of 37 sports, which range from the immensely popular to the impressively niche. There’s something for everyone, so I must commend the depth of this bookie’s coverage. However, I was particularly impressed by William Hill’s football offering.

Enhanced odds are offered daily on football events, with #YourOdds allowing you to create your own combo bets. For the most popular games, there are often over 700 different markets on offer! What more could you want? This bookie goes to remarkable lengths to ensure any possible betting outcome is offered as a part of their pre-match offering.

They also offer a range of outright markets, although these are typically limited to Outright Winner for less popular divisions. For their Premier League offering, forecasts, relegation, Top Four, and Top Scorer markets are available.

While their coverage is superb, it wouldn’t be much use if William Hill’s margins were sub-par. So, to test the quality of this bookmaker’s odds, I decided to calculate the odds overround. To put it simply, this is the combined sum of priced probability across all outcomes on a solitary event. In the betting industry, the consensus is that having an overround of over 110% is substandard.

Thankfully, the overrounds for the three games I tested came in at 106.33%, 106.48%, and 106.45%, meaning the site’s margins are consistently brilliant!

William Hill’s minimum stake is low at 3p, and they boast a maximum payout of £2,000,000 on most sports. Thus, the maximum stake is dependent on the odds of your bet.

Esports

The esports coverage at William Hill is sufficient, but not outstanding. While events and tournaments for a whole host of games, including League of Legends, Counter-Strike, VALORANT, King of Glory, and StarCraft are provided, the markets offered are limited.

However, bookmakers are pretty limited as to what markets they can offer. For most events, William Hill supply map betting, as well as Correct Score and handicap markets.

Unlike most other bookmakers, though, this bookie also offers award markets which I’ve never seen before elsewhere. These include Streamer of the Year, Personality of the Year, and Game of the Year.

Other Specials

There’s plenty to get stuck into here. On the TV front, you can bet on Strictly Come Dancing, I’m a Celebrity, Eurovision, and Sports Personality of the Year. There are Emmy’s markets, too, as well as Oscar’s coverage for next year.

Novelty markets include who’ll be the next James Bond, as well as the winner of the Mark Zuckerberg vs Elon Musk fight.

Their politics offering is limited to US and UK markets, although there are several offered for the latter. These include next party leader and when Rishi Sunak will leave his current position as PM.

Cash Out & Bet Builder

William Hill offers both Cash Out (‘Cash In My Bet’) and Partial Cash Out (‘Partial Cash In My Bet’) options which hands you more control over your bets than ever before.

They also provide a Bet Builder in the form of #YourOdds.

In-Play Betting 5/5

  • Live coverage easy to access
  • Myriad of sports accessible live
  • William Hill TV for livestreaming

William Hill In-Play Betting Screenshot

William Hill’s live coverage is accessible via the ‘In-play’ tab located on the left-hand side of the homepage. Accessing their in-play markets is simple, and, at the time of writing, there were 64 live events to bet on with the bookie covering a range of sports.

Given their excellent pre-match football coverage, I was keen to see how William Hill’s live offering compared. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. While the markets offered were somewhat basic, their coverage was sufficient. For the game I checked out, goals, teams, and handicap sub-markets were on offer. That said, it’s worth noting that this was an incredibly low-profile fixture.

There are a bunch of useful in-play graphics such as a match tracker and a timeline, while an array of stats are provided. Unfortunately, you cannot live stream football matches on William Hill, but you can watch various UK and Irish horse racing events via William Hill TV. You must be logged in to access these streams, however.

Service & Customer Support 3/5

  • Contact via Live Chat and Twitter
  • Bot initiated Live Chat session
  • Rather complex issue wasn’t resolved
Customer Service Details Duration Availability
Live Chat Find us tab at the bottom of the homepage, ‘Contact us’ link will bring up Live Chat Within a few of minutes 24/7
Twitter @WillHillHelp Within a few hours 08:00-23:00 (BST) every day

Although you can contact William Hill via phone and email, that information isn’t available on the website. However, I do know that you can contact this bookmaker via Live Chat and Twitter. While the former is available 24/7, their Twitter service is in operation every day between 08:00 and 23:00. However, don’t expect the efficiency of their Live Chat function regarding getting a response. It may take a few hours.

William Hill also boasts a rigorous FAQ section which covers a range of queries. This page is well laid out, making it incredibly easy to access any sort of query you might have. It’s one of the most extensive list of FAQs I’ve seen.

With that in mind, you might not need to contact William Hill’s support staff, but I decided to give their Live Chat service a run out anyway. I’ve been having login issues due to an account I created in my name years ago, so I wanted to get this resolved.

William Hill Live Chat Screenshot
Part of my discussion with William Hill’s virtual assistant

Unfortunately, I was immediately put in a session with the bookie’s virtual assistant which couldn’t solve my issue. However, I found this bot to be more useful than others, and they put me into contact with a member of William Hill’s support staff after a couple of minutes.

It took 12 minutes for the agent to get into contact, but once they did, I was able to gain clarity regarding my situation. Once I confirmed who I was, they told me I had to verify my account. So, I sent my documents to William Hill, but I’m yet to receive a response despite sending the email to their verification team days ago.

So, my logging in issue remains unresolved, but it appears a rather complex problem and I can’t fault the support team too much for not finding a resolution. While the staff were friendly enough, the whole process took far too long.

Design & Usability 3/5

  • Chaotic interface
  • Adverts dominate
  • William Hill Radio

William Hill Homepage Screenshot

While William Hill’s site design and logo are immediately recognisable, I wouldn’t exactly say either are particularly stylish. I wasn’t overawed by the design of their website as there’s just so much going on. I’d argue that some components of the site are gimmickier compared to established competitors, with William Hill filling their site with advertisements, especially on the homepage.

However, I understand that the size of their sportsbook renders it tough to provide a perhaps more user-friendly experience when navigating the site. They want to show off as much as possible, and the layout is hardly disastrous. It’s just a bit chaotic.

I had no issues accessing the various products offered by William Hill, which are listed at the top. An A-Z list of the sports offered runs down the left-hand side, with featured and popular events and markets dominating the centre along with several adverts.

‘Top Bets’ are shown down the right-hand side, with my bet slip popping up at the bottom. It wasn’t immediately clear what that small blue tab was at first, I must say.

There isn’t a blog of sorts, nor are there statistics, but William Hill does provide a comprehensive results summary for all the sports they cover. However, this bookie boasts a radio station which users can listen in to, offering live commentary, expert analysis, and tips primarily for horse racing events. Think of it as a verbal blog.

Mobile 5/5

  • Available on iOS and Android
  • All features available
  • Well laid out

William Hill Mobile Screenshot

While I criticised the chaotic structure of William Hill’s website, I found their mobile app to be well put together. Sure, there are a lot of elements, but everything appears to be a little more spaced out with less advertisements dominating the screen.

The layout is somewhat similar in that popular events and featured markets run down the centre, with the menu icon located at the bottom of the screen. This is where you can access all components of William Hill’s mobile app, which is available to download on the App Store and Google Play. There’s no content reduction on the app, and the technical performance was flawless.

It’s a similar story with the mobile browser version, which boasts an almost identical structure to the app. Once again, there is no content reduction, and the technical performance was very impressive. If you have issues downloading the app, this is a fine alternative for mobile bettors.

Other Products

  • Casino
  • Live Casino
  • Poker
  • Bingo
  • Vegas

William Hill Casino Screenshot

Alongside its impressive sportsbook, there are various other products offered by William Hill. You can also access an excellent online casino product which boasts a whole host of games ranging from slots to table games. Live casino events include roulette and blackjack.

As a casino player at William Hill, you’ll also be offered daily bonuses, such as free spins, giveaways, prize draws, bonus drops, and daily cash prizes.

To get you started, the site welcomes you with a Vegas welcome offer. With this promotion, you can earn up to 200 Free Spins on Big William Hill Fortune after staking £10 on any casino game. A maximum of £30 is redeemable, but you must enter the code ‘B10’ during the registration process to qualify.

ThePuntersPage Final Say & Overall Rating 4/5

It’d be unfair to hold my login issues completely against the bookmaker, so I’m not going to let that cloud my judgement. While I believe there are superior bookies on the market, you cannot go wrong with William Hill. Their sportsbook is excellent is the perfect option for football bettors.

While there is a lack of original sportsbook promotions, the sheer number of betting options reduces the need for a deep supply of offers. The mobile app is excellent, too, and I’d certainly recommend using that over their website.

Responsible Gambling Disclaimer 4/5

If you decide to bet with one of the industry’s giants, always remember to gamble responsibly. If you’re ever worried that your gambling might be spiralling, please be quick to seek advice.
